Truck runs over sunbathing reality star?s head

Brittany Taltos (left, pictured with sister Erica) escaped relatively unharmed after having her head run over by??

What's an appropriate gift to send after accidentally running over a woman's head with a truck? Well, if you're 20-year-old Taylor Greer, you bring flowers and an apology.

The victim was 23-year-old Brittany Taltos, best known as a reality television star on Jersey Shore and ABC's Bachelor Pad. Taltos was sunbathing in her own front yard when Greer's Chevrolet Silverado ran over her head.

"I honestly thought I was going to die," Taltos told The Ledger. Amazingly, Taltos remained conscious throughout the ordeal and received 15 stitches after being rushed to a nearby hospital at the University of Florida.

A standard Chevrolet Silverado weighs approximately 4,500 pounds.

The Gainesville, Florida Fire Department says the point of impact left a noticeable depression in the front lawn. Talto's roommate said she had "visible tire tracks" on her face after the accident.

Taltos was actually asleep at the time of the accident and wearing headphones.

"I woke up with half a tire in my face," Taltos told the Florida Independent. "I thought I was going to die."

Taltos has been chronicling the reaction to her accident on her Facebook page, where she has received an outpouring of support from friends and fans.

"It was very fortunate she was on softer ground where this occurred or the injuries may have been much worse if not fatal," Gainesville Fire and Rescue Lt. Tracey Hidgon told the Ledger.

Through it all, Taltos has remained remarkably upbeat as she recovers form her injuries. "I am in such a good mood today, even though my head is pounding," she said.

Amazingly, Greer was not charged with any crime or even issued a citation after the incident. He told police he was backing up on the driveway to drop of a barbecue grill after tailgating.

"I was very relieved, very relieved," Greer told the Ledger when informed that Taltos would recovery from her injuries.

Mommy Blog Expert: Top 3 DIY Fall Home Improvement Projects ...

Home Style

Editor's Note: Summer is but a distant memory. If you're like me right about now you could use some inspiration to finally take on those do-it-yourself home improvement projects you procrastinated about during those lazy warmer months. So I'm pleased to present this guest post by home improvement expert and TV personality Lou Manfredini.?Hopefully you'll learn a new thing or two in this story and be motivated to get out your toolbox and get to work -- I know I sure did.

Guest Post?
by Lou Manfredini?

Active summer months can play havoc on your home, whether you?ve been playing host for the neighborhood kids or simply spending more time enjoying warm summer days. With cooler temperatures on the horizon, it?s the perfect time to tackle a few do-it yourself projects around the house and to save some money along the way.?

Smart preparation can make all the difference when you?re taking on projects around the house. Whether you?re adding insulation to help reduce heating bills or restoring tired floors or furniture, it?s important to protect yourself with the proper safety gear.

Rev up the kids' outdoor toys after a long summer of play
You?ve invested a lot of money in outdoor kid?s toys, like the plastic table and chairs or a little pedal car. ?But they now look a little tired after a summer?s use.? Instead of sending them to the landfill, breathe new life into them with a fresh coat of vibrant spray paint and it?s so easy to do!

Clean the toys first and allow them to dry completely before painting. ?When painting make sure to use a respirator and eye protection and spray these items in a well-ventilated area.? Apply light coats and allow those to dry about 30 minutes before recoating. Your toys will look as good (or better!) than new!

Save money, save energy
There are many ways to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of your home, but one of the best ways is to add insulation to your attic. ?Your attic is like a hat on your head; warm air will rise and exit right out of the vents ? air that you paid to heat.

This one step will make a big difference in your heating bills but please make sure you take the proper safety precautions when installing it in your home. Wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt, eye protection and a respirator, like the like 3M? TEKK Protection? Sanding and Fiberglass Valved Respirator. This particular respirator features 3M? Cool Flow? Valve technology for heat reduction and easier breathing and will help protect your lungs from insulation fibers which may escape into the air.?

Add some fall flair by refinishing furniture and wood flooring?
Save money and add some new flair to your home by refinishing a piece of furniture. Wood floors add lasting beauty to your home and it?s one of the only flooring options that can be renewed. Better yet, this is a project that you can do yourself, and if you take your time will produce professional results.
  • First, sand down the piece of furniture with medium grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge to get into the nooks and crannies.
  • Use a finish stripper if there are many coats of finish or paint. ?When using chemical strippers it is very important to wear a proper respirator. The Paint Odor Valved Respirator from 3M TEKK Protection has an extra carbon layer for odor reduction and is a perfect option for this type of project. Refinishing Gloves will also help protect your hands and don?t forget safety eyewear to prevent possible splashes in your eyes.
  • Once all the finish is off of the piece, lightly sand again.
  • Stain the wood in the color of your choice with a brush, let dry, lightly sand with #0000 steel wool and apply a finish. Three coats total and you now have a new-old piece of furniture to display in your home.?
Whatever projects you take on, remember to be prepared and do it right by doing it safely.?For more projects and DIY safety tips visit the?3M Tekk?site.About the Author of this Guest Post

Emotional Intelligence Bridges Intergenerational Conflict

Intergenerational conflict is a term probably many small business owners as well as those in sales management have never considered within their organizations.? Employees sometimes don?t get along and that is part of the workplace and has been for decades. Yet, today with four unique generations in the workforce and a fifth one just looming on the horizon, intergenerational conflict will become more and more evident.

intergenerational conflict

Yesterday I attended a Lunch and Learn sponsored by Express Pros of Northwest Indiana entitled the Faces of Change in the workplace. This learning experience centered around a video produced by Express Pros.

One key point within this learning event was a recent survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) where 72% of those who responded indicated intergenerational conflict was an issue within their organization.

Since human beings still are not telepathic, most conflict be it in the workplace, the family or just in society happens because of communication.? ?Someone communicates either verbally or non-verbally her or his dislike of a situation to a person. The by product of this expressed dislike is conflict.

Conflict can be very damaging to any organizational in that it impedes performance and may even lead to a negative work environment.? This type of workplace is very costly as it usually has higher than average employee turnover to even law suits.

Emotional intelligence bridges conflict and especially intergenerational conflict. Individuals who recognize, understand and the manage the emotions of others while also recognizing, understanding and managing their own emotions have a greater opportunity to avoid conflict in most situations.

Emotional intelligence is viewed as a positive leadership skill.? When this intelligence works with the different communication styles (DISC) as suggested by the work of William Marston, then intergenerational conflict is dramatically reduced. Small Business Coaching Tip: Daniel Goleman?s book Working with Emotional Intelligence is a must read for small business owners, those in sales management and any professional in today?s workplace.

With the workplace changing and good help being hard to find and keep, possibly now is the time to look at developing the emotional intelligence of your employees and even yourself. This may be one of the best investments you ever made.

Leanne Hoagland-Smith is a certified DISC, Emotional Intelligence, Attribute Index consultant and can support you in your efforts to assess and then develop your employees to be better. She can be reached at 219.759.5601 Chicago, CST.

P.S. The DISC tool is also great to better understand the buying behaviors of your prospects and then from that information match those buying behaviors to your selling style.? Join others on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 from 12-12:30pm Chicago CST for a FREE webinar ?If you are telling, you ain?t selling.? With Veterans Day just around the corner, web hosting provider 1&1 Internet announced on Wednesday it has launched its ?1&1 Veteran Appreciation Program? in a new campaign in support of all United States? troops.

The move comes a week after 1&1 launched a free suite of applications that are designed to be used within the company?s MyWebsite plan.

In the press release, 1&1 says it is the ?first campaign of its kind in the web hosting industry,? providing veteran small business owners with a 1&1 MyWebsite Plus package, completely free of charge, for six months.

The company has been heavily promoting its website builder 1&1 MyWebsite plans via a television advertising campaign.

95% Argo

All Critics (190) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (181) | Rotten (9)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

Suspenseful movie based on a true incident; Ben Affleck's stock rises as an actor and director.

It not only confirms Affleck as one of the few A-listers to have made a credible transition to behind the camera, but that he's one of the most exciting mainstream directors around, full stop.

Affleck's seamless melding of intense thrills in Tehran and biting humour in California makes for a wholly satisfying movie.

The use of dramatic licence in the finale is too obvious but aside, Argo is a solid dramatic thriller that is informative, entertaining and gripping.

The film has heart and brains as well as balls, the screenplay delivering a clear and strong story without sacrificing either political or personal context

As a real life human drama, it is extraordinary. As a thrilling movie experience, it is unmissable

A thoroughly enjoyable, well put together movie that flies by, works well and largely succeeds at what it is trying to accomplish. Also one of those movies where it feels like "I should LOVE it - but don't."

It's okay to take a few liberties in the name of a good story

A funny trip to Hollywood and gripping escape from Tehran.

The scenes involving Goodman and Arkin are ribald and laugh-out-loud funny. You couldn't ask for two more expert actors to play these jaded movie veterans.

If there's one lesson to be gleaned from director Ben Affleck's relentlessly tense, painstakingly detailed Argo, it's that we should consider the possibility that our history has been manipulated more than many of us would care to admit.

Argo smacks of being another dreary Oscar contender but in actuality it's destined to be one of the fall's most purely enjoyable films.

Ar-go see them in action.

... a crackling good suspense thriller ...

I was literally in tears for parts of Argo, a purely physical reaction, not an emotional one, to deal with the tension... That isn't only some serious movie magic, it's a downright master class in suspense filmmaking from director Ben Affleck.

Under its own terms as an upscale mainstream thriller, it's a total success. This is classy moviemaking, from its well-observed performances to immaculate eye for period detail.

a crackerjack based-on-a-true story thriller that finally allows actor/director Ben Affleck to demonstrate his behind-the-camera muscles in a location other than his native Boston

[A] perfectly lovely, immensely watchable, intermittently shallow, and slightly bloated thriller.

Successfully manages to be respectful about the turbulent events and function as an exciting Hollywood spy thriller.

Tablet War: Apple Debuts iPad Mini ? at $329

Steve Jobs said it would never happen. Yet a smaller Apple just fell from the iPad tree.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and vice president of marketing Phil Schiller took to the stage in California at a media event to finally unveil the company's long-awaited iPad mini -- something Jobs once declared the company would never do. The new $329 product is meant to compete with smaller, 7-inch tablets from companies like Google and Amazon that are nipping at the tech giant's heals.

"You knew there'd be something called Mini in this presentation," Schiller joked with the crowd before revealing the hotly anticipated gadget. Apple has sold 84 million iPads since their debut in April 2010, he said.

"So this iPad mini is just 7.2 mm thick. That's about a quarter thinner than the fourth-generation iPad. Thinner than a pencil," Cook told the crowd. The new product has the same resolution as the larger display 1,024 ? 768, but it should look sharper thanks to the smaller screen.

"You can hold it in one hand," he said. It's not just a shrunken down iPad. It's an entirely new design." Yet the new mini will run all of the software designed for the full-size siblings, he said. The mini will start with 16GB of storage at $329; a 4G model will cost an additional $129.

Samsung to stop selling its montitors to Apple?

Cook announced an update to the iPad prior to that that he labeled a "fourth-generation" model with updated specifications.?But he began the event by touting the company's success in software -- especially the app store.

"We've reached another milestone ? customers have downloaded 35 billion apps from the store. This is jaw dropping," Cook said.

It's the iconic hardware that Apple is known for, of course, and the company wasted no time unveiling it. Phil Schiller,?senior vice president of worldwide marketing for the company, joined Cook on stage to tout the company's victories in that arena, as the pair noted that Macs are the number one desktop and notebook in the country.

To continue that momentum, Schiller revealed a new 13-inch MacBook Pro that he said is 20 percent thinner than the previous generation, and a pound lighter. The new laptop features a 2.5-GHz Intel processor, a high-resolution Retina display with over 4 million pixels, and a solid-state drive rather than a spinning disk. It will start at $1,700, he said.

Schiller also described updates to the company's Mac Mini and iMacs, the later drawing oohs and aahs from the assembled crowd. The new iMac, which starts at $1,299, is a razor-thin all in one computer that starts shipping next month, he said.

"There is an entire computer in here," he said, despite the product's incredibly tiny form.

"We sold more products in the June quarter than any PC manufacturer sold in their entire PC line," Cook said as he returned to the stage.

Windows 8 vs. Windows RT: What's the difference?

'7-inch tablets are tweeners ... too small to compete with an iPad.'

    - Steve Jobs

Prior to the start of the event -- held at The California Theater in San Jose -- tech pundits batted forth ideas about what the device would look like, based on various leaks and rumors. The talk correctly centered on a 7.85-inch screen , according to various leaks and reports.

The display was predicted to have a resolution of 1,024 ? 768, according to a new report by DigiTimes. That means it won?t sport a super high quality Retina display, but will have the same resolution as the iPad 2 (with its 9.7-inch screen).

Price is the next big question, especially since Amazon and Google?s offerings start around $200, about half the price of a new iPad. It?s not Apple?s style to compete on price, however, and the company isn't shy about tacking on a healthy premium. Most analysts expected Apple's newest to come in at either $299 or $349, potentially replacing the aging iPad 2.

The event comes just days before Microsoft starts selling a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to work on both traditional computers and tablets. Microsoft will also release its own tablet, the Surface, on Friday.?

It will be slightly larger than the full-sized iPad.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The party that runs the Senate next year may be decided by how well President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney do in toss-up states like Nevada, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin, where ballots feature parallel Senate races about as tight as the presidential contest.

The mammoth campaign organizations built by Obama and Romney, his Republican challenger, are focusing their voter registration and turnout efforts in those four states and a handful of other presidential battlegrounds. Congressional candidates there are latching onto the help that can come from the larger, better-funded presidential campaigns.

In Nevada, Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley is hoping to buttress her challenge to Republican Sen. Dean Heller with the Obama campaign's efforts to register Hispanic voters. In Virginia, the GOP has operated 29 offices across the state combining the operations of Romney, Senate candidate George Allen and House candidates.

Democrats control the Senate 53-47, including two independents who vote with them. Of the 33 seats up for grabs on Election Day, a dozen are considered competitive, largely in the West and Midwest. Republicans need a net pickup of four seats to take control if Obama is re-elected, three if Romney wins.

Both sides are measuring the impact of the presidential race at a time when spending on congressional races ? especially by outside groups ? is mushrooming.

In the House, Democrats have been hoping that a strong Election Day performance by Obama could lift their candidates, especially in states he is expected to win easily like New York, Illinois and California. They may make some gains but seem unlikely to pick up 25 seats they need to wrest House control from the GOP. Only about 60 seats are considered competitive in the 435-member House.

"There's no question we pick up seats in direct correlation to the president's coattails," said Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., who heads the House Democratic campaign organization.

Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., deputy chairman of the House GOP's political operation, concedes that a strong Obama showing would likeliest strengthen the Democratic vote in urban areas, where Republicans have few seats anyway. Republicans hope to limit Democratic pickups by winning seats of their own in North Carolina, Arkansas, Indiana and even Massachusetts.

"It helps us if Romney is doing better," especially in rural and suburban areas where many GOP lawmakers come from, Walden said. "And Governor Romney is doing much better" than he was earlier in the campaign, said Walden.

In Ohio, Republican challenger Josh Mandel is hoping for a late surge by Romney that might also lift him past Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. Polls show Brown, who has a liberal pro-labor voting record, consistently leading Mandel and doing better in the state than Obama, whose advantage in the pivotal state has narrowed.

On Friday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reported spending $2.3 million for TV and radio ads to help Mandel, making Brown one of the business lobby's top targets.

"If Romney could keep it close, Mandel's going to be in the Senate," said Scott Reed, a top political strategist for the chamber.

In a debate last week, Mandel hammered his rival for supporting Obama's health care overhaul and for driving up the national debt with efforts such as the federal auto rescue. Brown made no apologies, ticking off benefits he said each law brought to average Ohioans.

"I'm proud of that because now more than a million Ohio seniors now get free checkups," he said of his support for the health care law.

In wide-open Virginia, the presidential race's impact on the Senate contest may be tempered by the near universal name recognition of the two Senate rivals. Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine are former recent governors, and the $20 million the two have combined to spend so far makes their contest one of the nation's most expensive, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

"Headwinds will largely come from the presidential, but because name identification is so high for both Governor Allen and Governor Kaine, these races will be nearly mirroring each other," said Pete Snyder, chairman of the GOP's coordinated presidential and congressional campaigns in the state.

Ticket-splitting is as much as factor in some Senate races as coattails. Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin is heading toward re-election in West Virginia and there are tight Senate races in Arizona, Indiana and North Dakota, though Romney seems certain to win all four states.

Obama is sure to win Connecticut, yet professional wrestling magnate Linda McMahon, a Republican, is running a well-financed and strong race against Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy for the seat being vacated by independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.

The presidential contest is also providing plenty of fodder for congressional campaigns ? and not just in the frequent attacks that Republicans make on Obama and Democrats launch against Romney.

In a play for moderate Virginia voters, Kaine uses one TV spot to position himself between Allen and Obama. The ad states Obama's preference to block a renewal of decade-old tax cuts on income exceeding $250,000, and Allen's insistence ? shared by most Republicans ? on extending the reductions for all.

"There's a middle ground. Let the tax cuts expire for those earning over $500,000," Kaine tells the camera, calling it "the fiscally responsible thing to do."

In an Indiana ad, Senate Democratic hopeful Rep. Joe Donnelly attacks his GOP rival, tea party favorite Richard Mourdock, using presidential debate footage of Romney saying he got little done as Massachusetts governor "by saying it's my way or the highway." Mourdock "is all about my way or the highway," the ad says.

And in a Wisconsin Senate debate last week, GOP candidate Tommy Thompson distanced himself from the House-passed budget written by Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential candidate. His rival, Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, repeatedly linked him to the blueprint that she argued would raise taxes on the middle class.

"You're absolutely wrong," Thompson told Baldwin. "I have a plan completely different from Paul Ryan."

Meanwhile, spending has continued to accelerate on congressional races by both political parties and outside groups, including Crossroads GPS backed by former White House GOP strategist Karl Rove and unions such as the SEIU.

According to the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation, which monitors campaign spending, outside groups have spent $161 million since June 1 on House races and $156 million on Senate races, with Republicans benefiting from a modest advantage.

But that spending has accelerated in recent days, especially on the GOP side, the foundation found.

In the week ending last Friday, groups have spent $13 million to help House Democratic candidates and $22 million for House Republicans. Senate Democratic hopefuls have benefited from $6 million, Senate Republicans from $10 million.

In one instance, an obscure conservative group, the Government Integrity Fund Action Network, spent $1.1 million for an ad attacking Democrat Elizabeth Esty, who is seeking an open House seat in Connecticut. That is a huge expenditure for a House race.

The Senate Democratic campaign committee spent $1.6 million to advertise against Allen in Virginia.

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every 13 minutes, a woman dies from the disease, totaling nearly 40,000 women a year.

The seriousness of breast cancer can?t be understated. Yet according to the University of Florida Academic Health Center?s Breast Center, one of six Centers of Excellence in Florida, death rates from the disease are steadily decreasing. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors live in the U.S.

Increased awareness, improved treatments and early detection have been key, and UF is helping attack the disease head-on.

In the community, UF has raised awareness through events such as the Pink Pumpkin Fest held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the lab, UF researchers launched more than 4,200 clinical research studies in the last four years with vital results.

For instance, studying how women?s genes and the environment affect cancer could lead to new drugs and treatments that prevent and kill the disease, says Lindy Brounley, UF Shands Cancer Center communications director.

Patients can extend long-term survival and cut down tumors through a UF-pioneered autoimmune response induced by radiotherapy. The process vaccinates women against their own cancer.

And UF researchers are leading the world?s first surveillance imaging trial to monitor breast cancer patients at a high risk of cancer spreading to their other organs, Brounley says.

See how else UF has been involved this year:

Father Dies Shielding Children From Shooter, Gunman Shoots ...

Los Angeles, CA ? A 30-year-old father was found shot in his home, where he was allegedly shielding his children from a gunman?s fire. The Inglewood, California home was set afire before the gunman, wearing a painter?s mask, shot the man and his family. Three children and their mother were also shot.

The father died in surgery, reports NBC News, as did the 4-year-old he was shielding.

The suspected gunman, 55-year-old Desmond John Moses, had allegedly known the victims for years, but was in an argument with the family. Moses lived in a bungalow behind the victim?s home. The owner of the property reported that Moses had recently fought an eviction notice, but had lost the case in court. One of the victim?s family members claimed that Moses had not paid his rent, and that police had been called to his home multiple times for ?disturbances.?

The victim?s wife, a 28-year-old woman said to be the children?s mother, was being treated for severe gunshot wounds to the legs. In spite of her injuries, she carried the fatally injured 4-year-old to a neighbor?s yard after the shooting. ?This extraordinary rescue attempt by the mother occurred in spite of the fact that she had gunshot wounds to both legs,? a police department statement said. She was in critical condition upon her arrival at the hospital, as was a 6-year-old boy with a gunshot would to his pelvis. A 7-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. An 8-year-old boy was the only family member left uninjured.

Moses allegedly targeted the family at about 4 AM, setting fire to their home and then opening gunfire on the victims. As of Saturday morning, police were still investigating whether or not Moses fled the scene or remained in the burning building. He was in the process of being evicted from his home.

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens, File)

(AP) ? The Boston Red Sox are hoping that two big trades will help them get back to the playoffs after missing out three years in a row.

The first was a genuine blockbuster that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and Josh Beckett to the Los Angeles Dodgers and freed up more than $250 million in future salaries. The second was the deal that brought John Farrell back to Fenway Park on Sunday.

The Red Sox hired Farrell to be their new manager after pursuing him for more than a year, agreeing to trade infielder Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays to pry their former pitching coach out of the manager's chair in Toronto.

"I'm extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston," Farrell said in a statement released by the Red Sox. "I love this organization. It's a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans, and we want nothing more than to reward their faith in us."

Farrell had been the Toronto manager the past two seasons, posting a 154-170 record with two fourth-place finishes. He had one year remaining on his contract with the Blue Jays, allowing them to demand compensation from Boston.

It's the second time the Red Sox have pursued Farrell for their managerial job, closing the deal this time by working out a rare but not unprecedented trade for an active manager. Boston will give up Aviles, who hit .250 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs last season, and get right-hander David Carpenter in return.

It is the seventh time in major league history that one team has traded for a manager while he was under contract to another, the Red Sox said. Last year, the Miami Marlins obtained Ozzie Guillen from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that also included three players.

Farrell received a three-year deal in Boston, which also interviewed San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus, New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale.

"We met some outstanding managerial candidates in this process," Red Sox president Larry Lucchino said in the statement. "John Farrell brings a unique blend of managerial experience, leadership and presence, pitching expertise, front office experience, and an established track record with many members of our uniformed staff and members of our front office. He will hit the ground running."

The pitching coach in Boston for four years, Farrell was the heir apparent to Terry Francona before going to Toronto two seasons ago when it seemed like Francona would be sticking around long-term. When Francona was let go after an unprecedented collapse in September 2011, the Red Sox tried to pry Farrell loose from the Blue Jays.

But Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos asked for a top player in return for Farrell, who had been there only one season and gone 81-81.

So the Red Sox turned to Bobby Valentine to bring discipline to a clubhouse in which players drank beer and ate fried chicken in the clubhouse during games. But the former New York Mets and Japanese Leagues manager alienated so many players that the team was forced to bail out on the season, trading three highly paid but underperforming players for a chance at a fresh start in 2013.

Valentine was fired after finishing in last place with a 69-93 record ? four games behind Toronto and the team's worst record since 1965. General manager Ben Cherington was back in the market for a manager, and this time he didn't need a hard-line disciplinarian.

"The team is in a different point than it was last year when we hired Bobby," Cherington said after firing Valentine. "The roster was fairly mature and we felt, mistakenly in retrospect, but we felt at the time, that we had a chance to win and the team was ready to win. We're now at a different point."

Farrell, 50, had a promising pitching career with the Cleveland Indians before an injury kept him out for the entire 1991 and '92 seasons. He returned to pitch sparingly in four more seasons, finishing his career with a 36-46 record and a 4.56 ERA.

He coached at Oklahoma State, where he pitched in college, from 1997-2001 and then spent five years in the Indians' front office before Francona, a former Cleveland teammate, brought him to Boston as pitching coach. Under Farrell's guidance from 2007-10, Red Sox pitchers held opponents to an AL-low .254 batting average and led the league with in 4,771 strikeouts.

Farrell is familiar with Red Sox management from his time in Boston and has worked with many of the club's pitchers ? including starters Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, who were All-Stars under his tutelage.

"His broad set of experiences, and exceptional leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead our team," Cherington said in the news release. "I have known him in various capacities throughout my career, and I hold him in the highest regard as a baseball man and as a person."

Aviles, 31, is a career .277 hitter who played 136 games for the Red Sox in 2012, mostly at shortstop.

Carpenter, 27, is 1-5 with one save and a 5.70 ERA over 67 career relief appearances with the Astros and Blue Jays. He appeared in 33 games in 2012, 30 with the Astros before being sent to the Blue Jays in a 10-player trade on July 20; he also made 23 minor-league appearances last season.

Originally a catcher, Carpenter converted to pitching in 2008.

Republican Party gives Romney financial advantage over Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitt Romney held a financial advantage over President Barack Obama heading into October thanks to strong fundraising by the Republican Party that will allow its candidate to spend more on the last stretch toward the November 6 election.

Campaign finance disclosures show the Romney campaign, the Republican National Committee and the fund they use jointly had $183.1 million in cash on hand at the end of September, more than Obama and the Democratic Party, who had $149.1 million.

Obama's campaign on its own has dwarfed Romney's in the money stakes in recent months, raising $136.2 million in September, according to a Reuters tally of latest reports. The Romney campaign alone raised much less: $76.1 million, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

But when taken together with the RNC, Romney had more to spend on advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts as the campaign entered its last lap with the two men running neck and neck in polls.

September was one of the toughest months for Romney as he lagged in the polls and suffered from the release of a secretly taped video showing him make remarks that 47 percent of the population who receive government benefits are "victims."

Nonetheless, he continued to grow his small-donor base in September and raised nearly a third of his money from checks of less than $200, Saturday's filings showed.

The FEC filings do not account for what the campaign said was a big uptick in online donations after Romney's strong performance in the first presidential debate on October 3.

Romney also has an advantage in support from "Super PACs" and other outside groups such as Republican strategist Karl Rove's nonprofit Crossroads GPS, which funds anti-Obama advertisements.

Republican-aligned groups spent $84.1 million on ads from September 10 through October 18, while pro-Democratic groups laid out less, $23.1 million, despite a strong fundraising month by pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action, according to Reuters analysis of spending disclosures to the FEC.

The lynchpin of Obama's fundraising effort has been the campaign's ability to collect donations on its own as opposed to the Democratic National Committee or outside-spending groups.

Campaign finance experts say Obama's more direct control of money offers greater flexibility in how to use it. Parties have limits on how much they can coordinate with a candidate's campaign on spending and TV stations promise campaigns - not outside groups or parties - the lowest prices on ads.

However, the ad barrage of the 2012 campaign has boosted prices on precious advertising time in crucial swing states and local TV station managers say campaigns are paying little attention to how much an ad costs as long as it airs in the little time left before Election Day.

Obama's campaign spent a whopping $111.4 million in September, the vast majority of that on the production and airing of ads, according to Reuters analysis of FEC filings. Romney's campaign, by comparison, spent $54.7 million, also mostly on advertising.

    SMALL DONOR CHASE

Obama this week released a list of "bundlers" - people raising $50,000 or more for his re-election effort - indicating that so far in this campaign, they helped him with at least $180.1 million. Romney has not disclosed his bundlers.

Romney held his last fundraiser in Florida on Saturday and the Obama campaign had its last one earlier this month.

Obama's prowess with small donors remained on a level with his record-setting 2008 White House bid as he relied on people giving $200 or less for more than a third of his cash this year.

Dollar-to-dollar, Romney's small-donor haul was at least $12.4 million versus $49.5 million for the president, according to a Reuters analysis of data provided to the FEC.

Small donor enthusiasm for Romney lagged through the summer months as he struggled to coalesce the party after the Republican primaries, said Bill Allison, editorial director at the nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation, which advocates for campaign finance transparency.

"Republicans are much more excited about him now," Allison said. Republican small donors include many evangelical conservatives and "they have become the forgotten group in the 2012 campaign," he said.

The RNC had $82.6 million in September, trouncing its Democratic counterpart, which had $4.6 million after taking out a $10.5 million loan.

AP source: 2 sailors to be punished in sex scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two U.S. sailors are expected to receive administrative punishments, but not be criminally charged, in connection with the prostitution scandal that engulfed U.S. Secret Service and military members preparing for a presidential visit to Colombia earlier this year, a senior military official said Friday.

The two sailors will be punished for hiring a prostitute and dereliction of duty for drinking within eight hours of the time they had to report for duty, the official said.

More than six months after the scandal erupted, and lengthy efforts to identify and locate witnesses and others involved, the two sailors were expected to be the final military members disciplined in the case. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to disclose sensitive legal developments.

In the military, nonjudicial or administrative punishments can take a wide variety of forms, from docking service members' pay or confining them to quarters to assigning them additional duties for a certain length of time. In some cases, it can be a letter of reprimand in their files, but in other cases administrative punishments can be career-ending, or delay or prevent any future promotions.

Of the dozen military members initially implicated, seven U.S. soldiers and two Marines received administrative punishments for what was described as misconduct, and one Air Force member was cleared. Three of the soldiers declined the administrative punishments and have requested courts-martial.

A lawyer for one of the sailors had complained that his client, David Hawley, was not around at the time the prostitutes were alleged to be solicited. The lawyer, Jeremiah Sullivan, said the sailors were unfairly stripped of their security clearances and reassigned to other tasks for months as they waited to see if they would be charged. The names of the other military members have not been made public.

The service members were investigated for bringing apparent prostitutes to their hotel rooms in Colombia shortly before President Barack Obama arrived in the country for an April summit, according to the military's investigation of the matter. The investigator's report, released in early August, described the misconduct as consisting "almost exclusively of patronizing prostitutes and adultery."

The scandal came to light after a public dispute over payment between a U.S. Secret Service agent and a prostitute at a Cartagena hotel spilled over into the hallway of the Hotel Caribe. The Secret Service and the military were in the Colombian coastal resort to prepare for Obama's participation in a Latin American summit. Eight Secret Service employees implicated in the incident were ousted and three were cleared of serious misconduct; at least two employees were fighting to get their jobs back.

U.S. Southern Command, headed by Gen. Douglas Fraser, conducted the investigation into the military members' involvement in the April incident.

iPod touch 5 unboxing and hardware tour

Apple's new iPod touch 5 makes the already nearly 2-dimensional iPhone 5 look thick by comparison, but we knew that already. Now that they've finally hit stores in all their multi-colored, looped up glory, we can finally get a good look at everything else.

In addition to Darth Vader black and Storm Trooper White, I picked up an Imperial Guard red and Leanna got a Max Rebo blue. (I'm still waiting on my Yoda green nano!) They all look great, at least fresh out of the package. The loop is the only slight let down. It's leathery, which is nice, but thin and, at least to my eyes, not very Apple-like. Something like the old iPod lanyard might have been a better choice.

We'll be back soon with a full review, but in the meantime, here's the unboxing and the hardware tour.
