Reviews [Movies]: Starship Invasions - Something Awful

1 2 Next page

Overview: An evil but very inefficient alien race tries to conquer Earth by mind-controlling one person at a time and making them commit suicide while shopping for avocados. Humanity's only hope of salvation lies with the intergalactic U.N., the worst robot ever built, and some drunk guy with a novelty pocket calculator.

Directed By: Ed Hunt, 1977

The Case For: A sci-fi movie released the same year as Star Wars, with a million-dollar budget and starring Christopher Lee as the antagonist? How bad could it be?

The Case Against: Star Wars used up all of the special effects, Christopher Lee doesn't get to move his mouth at any point during the film, and we're pretty sure the million dollars mostly went toward the staggering quantities of meth Ed Hunt et al must have consumed to make this movie.

Imagine a robot cobbled together from irregular trashcans, crazy glue, and some sort of diabolical fanny pack/girdle hybrid. Now imagine this hideously misshapen heap of sparkly latex lurching awkwardly up behind a spandex-clad Christopher Lee, oiling up his state-of-the-art robo-mittens, and proceeding to give the once-proud Man With the Golden Gun the filthiest, shiniest mechanical back rub your feeble organic brain can conjure for a solid 90 minutes or so. Now splice in some occasional footage from the 1979 Space Invaders World Championships and a disturbingly graphic documentary on cerebral gigantism, and finish it off by peppering in a couple shots of nudity so jarring and unnecessary even Rip Torn would find them tasteless. The movie you've just imagined is far better than Starship Invasions in just about every conceivable way, but it still manages to set the appropriate mood. Wait, is suicide a mood?

Starship Invasions (alternate title: Project Genocide) is the gross, throbbing brainchild of writer/director Ed Hunt, who went on to bring us the hard-hitting documentary Flying Saucers are Real!, a film whose otherwise untouchable credibility probably would've taken a slight hit if it tried to use any of the flying saucer effects from Starship Invasions. Not to say that the special effects here are marring an otherwise perfect science-fiction experience. An incredibly simplistic "aliens want to kill all humans because they're dicks" story is somehow strung together from a series of increasingly baffling and arcane plot points. On top of that, most of the so-called acting is of the staring-wordlessly-into-the-camera variety, case in point:

Meanwhile, the costume and set decisions range from tragically stupid to hilariously tragic to nearly Zardoz-ian levels of mind-melting psychedelic insanity, the end result of which is roughly equivalent to physically experiencing the final scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey, except instead of transcending space-time and evolution you just kind of quietly die inside and curl up in a fetal position on the floor next to your dog.

I WANT TO RING FOR SERVICEThe plot, such as it is, opens with a flying saucer (which looks suspiciously like it was pried off the front desk of the production team's Motel 6) wandering the countryside and abducting people, including a hick who makes Randy Quaid look like a slick Manhattanite, and a family who treats the alien spaceship like a bum with a filth-encrusted wash bucket, locking the car doors and avoiding eye contact until it goes away.

The aliens, who for some reason are all decked out in the alternate uniforms rejected by the St. Louis Blues, forgo the traditional anal probing and instead subject their captives to some steamy softcore action for no apparent reason. Seems like a pretty good deal as far as abductions go, at least right up until the kidnappees start offing themselves like Scandinavians*. The movie didn't feel like telling us anything about why any of this might be happening, and it might be our fault for watching it while it was in one of its 'moods,' but either way our best guess is that once you've had zero-G alien sex, there's just no going back to missionary so you might as well just eat a bullet.

*We'd like to take a moment to apologize to any Scandinavian readers out there we might have offended. We are sincerely and deeply sorry that you live in a part of the world so crappy and lame that even the sun won't go there. We wish you the best of luck with your ongoing struggle for survival against the elements, trolls, and endless maddening wastelands surrounding you on all sides, and earnestly pray that you will one day escape the cruel yoke of climate distribution under which God has seen fit to enslave you forever and ever. If you have any comments, please feel free to scribble them on some fish heads with the fermented urine and sheep snot your people use for ink (and also bathe in) and send them by vengeful raven to: trillaphon@somethingawful.com.

Saying "my stance hasn't changed,"?Krzyzewski?told ESPN Radio he expects USA Basketball to name a new coach this summer.

The Hall of Fame Duke coach said during and after last summer's Olympics that he wasn't planning to return to the position he's held with the national team since 2005. However, he still hasn't confirmed that decision with USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo, who has said they will talk after the college season.

"I've loved, loved, loved, and it's been an honor being with the USA Basketball team,"?Krzyzewski?said in the interview. "And to coach the team and work with Jerry these seven years has been marvelous.

"And we're in a good spot,"?Krzyzewski?added. "We need to keep building."

Krzyzewski?led the Americans to Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012, and a world basketball championship in 2010. The Americans also won bronze in the 2006 worlds, their first tournament under his guidance, and haven't lost a game since.

The Americans automatically qualified for the 2014 World Cup of Basketball in Spain by winning gold in London. Colangelo originally said he planned to name a new coach around the new year, but put off those plans so he could talk to?Krzyzewski?once the Blue Devils' season was finished.

The delay created speculation?Krzyzewski?was open to a return, but he told ESPN Radio that USA Basketball wouldn't make an announcement during the season, anyway.

If?Krzyzewski?is indeed finished, Colangelo will first have to determine if he wants to stay with a college coach or go back to someone from the NBA. Before?Krzyzewski, the Americans had been led by someone from the pros since 1992, when NBA players were first allowed to play in the Olympics.

But after a bronze medal finish in 2004, two years after an embarrassing sixth-place performance in the worlds, Colangelo was given control of USA Basketball and hired?Krzyzewski, who has been on the staff of 12 U.S. teams since 1979.

He got the Americans back on top with a thrilling victory over Spain in Beijing, then committed to return for another three-year stint the following year. The Americans' victory in Istanbul in 2010 was their first world title since 1994, and they won even though none of the '08 gold medalists returned.

Krzyzewski?has said he planned to remain close to Colangelo and the program even if he didn't return. He was asked in the interview if the U.S. would have a different coach in 2016, when they try for a third straight Olympic gold medal.

"Yeah, and he'll be great,"?Krzyzewski?said, "and he'll get all the support of all of us, and of me."

Dear Vivek: Think Big On Immigration | TechCrunch

Editor?s note:?Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez?represents the Fourth District of Illinois in the U.S. Congress and is the Chairman of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Follow him on Twitter?@LuisGutierrez.

I was sorry to read in your most recent post that you were ?disappointed? with my response to your article on immigration and Silicon Valley, but I am not surprised. You and I both support a top-to-bottom overhaul of our immigration system, but I think we fundamentally disagree on how to get there, including how to get us to a world-class, functioning immigration and visa system that helps, rather than hurts, the American economy and the high-tech industry.

You argue for the ?lean? approach, with a standalone bill for high-tech visas, startup visas, and H1B temporary worker visas. Think small, you seem to argue. Let us accomplish the most, in your estimation, politically popular and achievable components of reform first, and build on that success to work towards something bigger later.

That may be a good model for launching a startup, but it is not a model that fits Congress. Congress is hardly a startup and is not a place to expect long-term, rational or coherent strategic planning towards an eventual good outcome or IPO payday.

No, I prefer a different business model when it comes to enacting legislation: When the marketplace is ready for the next big thing, then you should move. Move quickly, and move big. We in Congress are a lot more like frogs on a skillet than forward-looking visionaries. When the heat is turned up, we move, and when it isn?t, we don?t. Right now, the heat is on both parties to deliver immigration reform that satisfies several decades of dissatisfaction. That dissatisfaction comes from all corners of America ? employers, working people, voters, immigrants and non-immigrants alike. The most popular solution on the table is to fix our immigration system and fix it well and not to try to divide up the issue into discrete chunks.

The best way ? the fastest and surest way ? to get the immigration policy that America needs to compete internationally is to pass a comprehensive immigration reform package that resolves as many of our immigration issues as possible in one bill. This means creating or improving on avenues for legal immigration, getting people who have been waiting decades to come legally through the process, legalizing those already living here through a rigorous but sensible process, and layering in smart enforcement mechanisms that will give the new and improved system integrity.

I find it ironic that a Congressman and former cab driver from Chicago has to be the one to tell you folks with the fancy degrees in Silicon Valley to ?think big!? But think big, we must.

In my last article, I focused mainly on the politics and why now is the right time to think big. The nativist wing of the Republican Party opposed to legal immigration no longer has as strong a grip, so many of my colleagues across the aisle are interested in working with Democrats to pass an immigration reform bill.? That is a monumental sea change that could allow us to create legal avenues for immigration that have been clogged, backlogged and unadjusted for too long.

But there is a more important reason to support comprehensive immigration reform right now, because we should reject the notion that one type of immigrant is good for us and another is bad for us. That has never been the case in American history and it is not the case now. We should have an immigration system that matches the needs of our society and the needs of our economy but that is fundamentally egalitarian.

I support a special visa program for STEM graduates in science, technology, engineering and math ? and I have. I support it more if it is part of a broader reform to bring sense to our entire immigration system.? Similarly with startup and millionaire visas, they should be part of the mix, but alone, they are not more popular, more politically viable, nor more justifiable than a reform that addresses the great level of need at all levels of our economy.

If measures to address the needs of the high-tech sector could pass independently from a comprehensive immigration reform package, I don?t think they would build support for broader reforms. Congress would probably consider the immigration reform box checked and move on to other issues until the heat was turned up again, and there?s no telling how long that would take.

What then would you have me say to the young person who grew up in the United States but cannot become a citizen, a licensed driver, or a college graduate because they were brought here as a child from another country without a visa? Sorry? You have to wait for the high-tech community in California to get what they need before you can be legal and get on with your life.

That is not an acceptable answer to me. And it?s not an acceptable answer to the American people. Fully 70 percent of the American people support immigration reform with legalization and a path to citizenship in the most recent Washington Post poll and the public support has been consistently high.

What about their parents who, like most undocumented immigrants, probably have lived here a decade or more raising their kids and working hard? Their work is valuable, too, and they should be given a chance to live honestly and uprightly in their adopted country because the reality is, they are part of this country.

What do I say to garlic pickers in Gilroy who are doubly exploited, because they are women and because they are undocumented? Your work and sacrifice for your children is less important than the work of other mothers and fathers farther up highway 101, but when you become more politically viable, we will address the fact that you are working and living in a country that enjoys the taste of your product but not enough to protect you with our wage and labor laws.

Then there is the father in New Jersey who I met a couple of years ago. He is no longer with us, but I carry his plea with me wherever I go. He was a Puerto Rican Vietnam veteran who was dying of cancer who asked me if I could help him prevent his wife from being deported. His children, raised in the United States and citizens from birth, were in danger of losing their mother, an undocumented immigrant, and he asked me to help make sure his family was not exiled or ripped apart after he died.

I know the urgency with which you and others in Silicon Valley seek visas and avenues for fair competition in a global market place, and I need you to keep insisting that the Congress move with all deliberate speed. But I also hear the desperate call from families and neighborhoods dealing with ramped-up enforcement of an irrational immigration system that is failing us. The status quo is unsustainable in so many ways, so all of us who want to get something done and move beyond the gridlock must work together to keep Washington to task.

Vivek, join me and we can accomplish more this year than we have been able to accomplish in decades. But we will only succeed if we are working together and think big.

Survivor Exit Interview: The super fan gets super screwed. | Mike's ...

Feb 26, 2013

Well, every tribe always has to go to Tribal Council eventually, right?? Unfortunately, in the case of Survivor Super fan Allie Pohevtiz, one time was all it took for her to be eliminated.? While not exactly a blind side, it turns out that the bartender had a chance to save herself, and chose to save Reynold instead.

It would seem that you aligned with the three other good looking people, but I?ve read in interviews that you say that?s not true. What do you think brought you together with Hope, Eddie and Reynold?
Allie: Hope and I got along, we just clicked right away. It wasn?t based on the way we looked or anything like that, we just had a lot in common, we talked about the same stuff. Hope was also bonding with Eddie and the boys were really close, so they brought us all together. But it was never about the way that we looked.

101917_d06140b_2Matt was also a part of your alliance and he didn?t really fit the look of the rest of you, how?d he fit in?
Allie: The thing with Matt is that we all just trusted him right away. Reynold and I pulled him aside right away and told him we wanted to be in the final three with him, we wanted to work with him. Hope thought the same thing, so she had a conversation with them. We all just talked about how much we enjoyed him and thoroughly trusted him. ?Matt is a really great guy. Little did we know that he was working with everyone else.

How stressful is it living with people who are constantly playing a game?
Allie: You really only relax when you know that you?re going to go home. The second you step on that beach it?s stressful. Anytime anybody breaks off, everyone panics. It was constant. And even though it looked like the four of us were together, we really tried out best to integrate in with everyone.

Second EpisodeWas it just Reynold that was looking for the Idol?
Allie: No, I definitely know that I was looking for it. So was Michael, I wanna say Sherri was too. There was a few of us.

Did you know that Reynold had the idol?
Allie: Yeah, I wasn?t surprised. He had the idol long before Tribal Council.

Did you ask Reynold if you could have the idol?
Allie: Well this would be where my stupidity played into it. Because Reynold told me that if I thought I needed the idol, then I could have it, but he didn?t think we would. So I could have played it. In my head, I just kept thinking that if the vote switched, I used the idol and then Reynold went home because of me, I could never live with myself. He was one of the few people I enjoyed out there. Instead, it got me sent home.

Shamar is very polarizing and seemingly infuriating. Do you think he?s like that outside of the game too?? Or is it a result of the conditions on Survivor?
Allie: I think it?s an exaggerated version of himself. I don?t think anyone be that ?on? 24 hours a day. He?s definitely not that intense in real life. I got stressed talking to him, I?m sure he got stressed talking to me. But yeah, that definitely wasn?t an act.

Is it smart to keep Shamar to the finals?
Allie: More power to Sherri, if she can keep him all the way to the finals, then you deserve a million dollars all the way. I was sick of him after three minutes on the island. So if you can deal with him for 39 days, I will hand you a million dollars.
You were such a fan of the show, is it still hard being voted off so early?
Allie: We got home so long ago, so I feel like I was finally over everything. But now that it?s airing, just to watch it again and how we?re all being portrayed. It?s really hard to watch. I feel like I had some closure and now it?s just re-opening everything.

Would you go back a second time?
Allie: I would go back in a heart beat. I would go back today with Shamar as my partner.

Maybe on the Amazing Race?
Allie: Well, I don?t know about that.

Taking The Pain Out of Hiring A Freelance Programmer | Team ...

Any kind of business, offline or online, will present you with lots of alternatives with alphamalecharacteristicshq from which you must choose. All brand new IM marketers may find that fact difficult especially when first getting started. Maybe one of the smartest approaches is to simply accept what is with online business and continue to move forward. There is much to become familiar with, but you should never approach this feeling like you have to become a total expert before you can make money. It is normal to make mistakes, and that is something you can look forward to because they will never end. You know your self that once you have been learning and doing, then you will naturally be better at executing your strategies. You can easily use the following to add much more depth to your current business efforts with the right information and attention. A great idea for a software program can strike anytime, and if that happens you have to hire a freelance programmer unless you can do it yourself. If you are unprepared, then it is not impossible to find yourself hiring another programmer to do it right, the second time. If you will be spending a lot of money for your project, then obviously it becomes even more important that you make the very best hiring decision. The purpose of this article is to help you learn about the various factors that you should remember when choosing a freelance programmer. You have to make sure any potential programmer knows and understands what you want from him or her. If there are any nuances at all that are important to you, then you need to be sure they know about them. It is always better to over-deliver in this area of description and software requirements as far as what it needs to do is concerned. If you have to go back and the programmer needs to make changes, then that will only cause delays on your end. Clear and frequent communications, when necessary, are the key to getting the project done properly and on time. You may have already guessed, or knew, that effective communications are the key to success for both parties. You can play an active, but non-intrusive, role in the way of offering the best communications you can provide. Just as you do not want to receive a ton of emails, neither does your freelance programmer. Opinions and ideas are fine, but just remember that the programmer is the person you hired for the expertise. Hopefully by the time you have made your selection, you will have laid the foundation for a solid rapport. It is fair to say that if all goes well, then both sides will want to maintain an open door. There are interesting attributes we all have because we are human, and this relates very strongly to suspending initial impressions if they seem negative until you have a complete picture. How do you feel about testing marketing methods that you never knew about or considered testing before? What we find amusing is the people who are simply too lazy to give this site an honest shot in their marketing. You will always need to carefully assess anything new, though, and that means you have to base your decisions on research, first. There are so many stories about scams on the net, and maybe one big reason people get hurt is due to insufficient investigation about something they want to try. Actually, one very smart move for newbies is to buy slow and do a lot of reading and asking questions, if possible, about whatever it is. But you should not be afraid of anything that appears to be new to you because there are some products that are excellent. Always seek to validate anything you read, and that is they only path to protecting your self. This all goes along with the thought of an ounce of prevention, and it is an ounce well spent, possibly. Complete a statement that is essentially the scope of your project, and that is the professional and expected course of action. If there are any misunderstandings, then the written documents will serve as an important source of reference. There will not be any problems on the other person?s part because they will be used to it. What we discussed in the above article is not at all difficult to apply, but not caring about these factors will definitely make things harder for you. Take out some time to hire a freelance programmer that actually lives up to your expectations and gives you the kind of results you want. We do avoid going for the bottom dollar spend here because you know what they say about getting what you paid for. We know huge numbers of web businesses have integrated this into their business, but what are your thoughts about it? Diversity in your marketing should be an ongoing business goal because there is too much for any one business plus it is always there to be used. When you have a diverse set of marketing and advertising campaigns underway, all the time, then if you lose one for some reason the effect is not devastating. We have read and heard about so many things over the years, and all the unfortunate things that happen to people are often partially self-inflicted in some way. We have talked to you about hemorrhoid no more, today, and we suggest you forget all the hype and look at your business as a very serious business that you grow and build all the time. Do not let your guard down with your business because you know very well what the potential consequences can be.

Protecting fish from antidepressants by using new wastewater treatment technique

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm have developed a new technique to prevent pharmaceutical residues from entering waterways and harming wildlife.

The new water treatment technology -- called membrane distallation -- separates drug residues from sewage with the help of district heating, says Andrew Martin, a professor at KTH's Institute of Energy Technology who worked on the development project with IVL and Scarab Development AB.

Martin says that water vapor passes through a thin, hydrophobic membrane of material similar to Goretex, and through an air gap, where it condensed onto a cold surface. Drug residues collect on one side of the membrane and pure water on the other.

"There is currently no technology capable of doing this cleaning process on a large scale," Martin says. "And for the membrane distillation process to work, the water temperature does not need to be very high, which is good."

Pharmaceutical residues in wastewater have been found to alter fish behavior and could even affect the growth of algae. A recent study at Sweden's Ume? University shows even low levels of Oxazepam detected in the Fyris River, in central Sweden, caused perch to become more antisocial, risk prone and active, making them an easier target for predators such as pike. The study measured levels of Oxazepam found in the perch, which were six times higher than in the water itself.

The study also indicated that the release of anti-anxiety drugs can affect entire ecosystems in a waterway, possibly contributing to an increases or decreases in the incidence of algae.

In a test of the membrane distillation technique at Hammarby Sj?stadsverket in Sweden, researchers found a level of 282 nanograms of Oxazepam per litre of wastewater. After ordinary treatment, that level of pharmaceuticals would essentially remain unchanged when the water is returned to the local waterway. But when treated with the membrane distillation system, the concentration was reduced to less than 2 nanograms per litre.

"Of all the 20th century-tested drugs, it is only the remains of the antidepressant Sertraline that we failed to clear 100 percent," Martin says. "We have some theories, but cannot yet explain why."

Martin and his colleagues are now awaiting results from the next step in the evolution of the technique. They are testing membrane distillation with drug residue levels that are nearly 10 times higher. "These samples are out for analysis right now," he says.

Navigation App Waze Adds Road Closure Reporting Feature, Says It Now Has 40M Users

waze road closureWaze, the app that uses crowdsourced data to build its maps and provide real-time traffic information, is introducing a new feature today allowing users to report road closures. This seems like a pretty natural extension of what Waze does ? drivers could already report things like accidents, so this is just giving them another way to get important information into the system. In fact, spokesperson Michal Habdank-Kolaczkowski told me that users were already doing in an ad hoc way, where the names of roads would be edited so they said (for example), "Capitol Ave CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION."

Misha Collins promoted to 'Supernatural' regular

The CW

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Well, this is "Supernatural" news to set our hearts aflutter. Misha Collins, who plays anguished angel Castiel on the CW drama, will return as a series regular for season nine.

"I don't think the feathers to the offices campaign was what saved the angel, but it does look like i'm going to be a regular for season 9," the amusing actor tweeted Monday.

Castiel has been a fan favorite ever since his introduction in season four. His death in season eight sparked outrage among supporters of the socially awkward angel, who was resurrected -- along with his rocking trenchcoat -- this season.

Like co-star Jensen Ackles, Collins will stretch his wings behind the camera: He's also set to direct an episode in the ninth season of the cult hit, which was officially renewed Feb. 11.

"Supernatural" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Chromebook Pixel review: Touchscreen may justify Google's $1,299 laptop

There's something magical about the Chromebook Pixel's display. You're so drawn in by its crispness that you want to press your hand against it. And when you finally give in to that urge ... you discover it's a touchscreen.

Woah.

But does that moment ? that instant when you instinctively touch a screen and it reacts the way your smartphone-obsessed brain expects ? merit paying $1,299 for a laptop that doesn't run Windows or OS X and is essentially just a hyper-evolved Web browser?

I could certainly justify the purchase to myself, because I live my life online. The only moments I truly leave my browser on any given day involve 10 or so minutes inside a proprietary Windows-only application I have to use for work. Otherwise the browser is it for me ? I can even edit photos with Photoshop's online service. And that means Chrome OS, the operating system Google put on the Pixel suits me just fine.

I don't mind if my applications reside on the Web and my data lives in the cloud, but that doesn't work for everyone. Some need software that doesn't have a Web version, some are without data connectivity too often, and so on. The Pixel isn't for those folks ? they can stop reading right here.

Those who prefer swimming in the open Web need to know about the Chromebook Pixel though.

Have I mentioned the screen? There's no photo I can offer that could do justice to the Pixel's screen, but if you've tried a newer iPhone, iPad, or an Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display, you'll understand. There are 239 pixels per inch (ppi) on the Pixel's 12.85-inch display ? which works out to about 4.3 million pixels ? so many that your eyes can't easily differentiate the individual glowing dots. (For comparison, bear in mind that the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display offers 227 ppi, the latest iPad has 264 ppi and the iPhone 5 checks in at 326 ppi.)

A Retina display on a laptop makes sense, but do people really also want multi-touch? Apple's late co-founder said no.

"We've thought about this years ago. We've done tons of user testing on this and it turns out it doesn't work," Jobs explained while a mockup of a MacBook Pro with a touch-sensitive display appeared on the screen during a press event on Oct. 20, 2010. "Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical."

"After a short period of time, you start to fatigue. And after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off." Jobs added. "It doesn't work. It's ergonomically terrible."

Jobs was right ? I tried using just the touchscreen, no trackpad, and I nearly apologized to my weary limbs ? but Jobs, with all due respect, was also wrong. Using the touchscreen in combination with the trackpad is a fairly pleasant experience. There are moments when touching the screen feels natural. Tapping through photos, scrolling through documents, scrubbing through video, and so on. Once you get acclimated to the fact that your laptop now responds to touch the way a phone or tablet might, you instinctively reach out at certain times. Otherwise, you just stick to the trackpad. It's a great balance.

Mind you, neither the Web nor the browser-based Chrome OS have become finger-friendly overnight. Buttons and links are still itty-bitty. It's a trackpad-and-mouse world and the Pixel just lives in it. I must admit that I have inadvertently scrolled or selected something while simply trying to point out an item on my screen to someone.

Thanks to my habit of alternating between lotions and hand sanitizer, every phone I handle is left with so many smudges on its screen that you'd think it was attacked by a sticky-handed toddler, but, strangely enough, the Pixel's screen seemed to be impervious to smudging during the time I used it.

Like a sneaky gray kitten, the Pixel runs so quietly that you might forget that it's there. And even more importantly: No matter how many tabs or windows are open, the laptop runs smoothly.

The keyboard will feel familiar to those who, like me, are used to Apple's. It is a bit firmer though, in the most satisfying of ways. (And yes, like other Chromebooks, the Pixel's Caps Lock key is replaced by a handy-dandy Search key.)

The Pixel's speakers are surprisingly loud and clear. You wouldn't expect the speakers on a laptop of this size to pack quite so much oomph. The rest of the laptop's body is equally impressive. The Pixel's got an anodized aluminium alloy body and it keeps vents, screws, and speakers as hidden as possible. No distractions ? just a slick, clean exterior hiding a dual-core 1.8GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of solid state storage (64GB if you opt for the LTE-enabled model), a 720p webcam, and all the usual laptop guts.

"If you love the Pixel so much, why don't you just marry it? You could be Rosa Golijan-Pixel," someone out there is shouting at this point. Like I said, buddy, this laptop's certainly not for everyone. Are you able to live in the browser and cloud?

And if you are sold on the Chrome OS, does having a touchscreen with an high pixel-density valuable justify the Pixel's high price? After all, Acer's Chromebook, with its dated hardware and clunky exterior, sells for a budget-minded $199.

Starting at $1,299, the Chromebook Pixel is considerably more of an investment. And you can step up to an LTE-enabled model with 64GB of solid state memory for $1,449. Both models come with one terabyte of Google Drive cloud storage for three years and 12 free GoGo in-flight Internet passes. The LTE-enabled model also comes with a free 100MB of data through Verizon Wireless per month for two years.

MetroPCS widens Rich Communications Services to all North American carriers

MetroPCS widens Rich Communications Services to all North American carriers

There's been a degree of irony to MetroPCS' support for Rich Communication Services when it's been limited to the one carrier's network in the US -- where's that universal chat and sharing we were promised? The carrier plans to live up to those lofty expectations with word that its Jibe Mobile-developed Joyn service will talk to devices on any North American carrier that supports the spec. That currently doesn't equate to ubiquitous access when RCS isn't widespread, but it's a start. We'll just have to wait for the expanded service to deploy later this year, and for more hardware to hit the streets.

Red Planet Mars Not So Red Beneath the Surface

The Red Planet's signature color is only skin deep.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity drilled 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) into a Red Planet outcrop called "John Klein" earlier this month, revealing rock that's decidedly gray rather than the familiar rusty orange of the Martian surface.

"We're sort of seeing a new coloration for Mars here, and it's an exciting one to us," Joel Hurowitz, sampling system scientist for Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., told reporters Wednesday (Feb. 20).

Mars gets its red coloration from a surface layer of dust that has undergone a rusting process, during which iron was oxidized.

Curiosity's hammering drill allows scientists to peer beneath that dusty veneer for the first time ever, and the early views at John Klein ? where the rover performed its first full-up drilling and sample-collection operation ? are intriguing, rover team members said.

The gray powder Curiosity collected "may preserve some indication of what iron was doing in these samples without the effect of some later oxidative process that would've rusted the rocks into this orange color that is sort of typical of Mars," Hurowitz said.

Curiosity landed inside the Red Planet's huge Gale Crater last August, kicking off a two-year prime mission to determine whether the area could ever have supported microbial life. The 1-ton rover carries 10 different science instruments and 17 cameras, along with other tools such as its arm-mounted, rock-boring drill.

The drill was the last of Curiosity's gear to get vetted and tested on the Red Planet, and the rover team is thrilled that its first run went so smoothly.

"It's a real big turning point for us," said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena.

Snagging rock powder from the depths of John Klein ? which shows signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water ? also cements Curiosity's place in the history books, rover team members said.

"This is the first time any robot, fixed or mobile, has drilled into a rock to collect a sample on Mars," said JPL's Louise Jandura, sample system chief engineer for Curiosity. "In fact, this is the first time any rover has drilled into a rock to collect a sample anywhere but on Earth."

UFC 157?s Three Stars: Ronda Rousey, Robbie Lawler and Dennis Bermudez shine

UFC 157 completed the rare trick of living up to its intense hype. Who stood out as stars?

No. 1 star ? Ronda Rousey: Is there any better word to describe Rousey than star? After months of Rousey appearing on television, in magazines and on every site on the internet, she showed she's more than a media darling. Rousey not only escaped a submission attempt by Liz Carmouche, but also finished the fight with just 11 seconds to go in the first round. That's a star.

No. 2 star ? Robbie Lawler: Looking at this fight card, would you ever have guessed that Lawler would emerge as a star? Before returning to the UFC on Saturday, he lost three of his last five bouts. He was up against Josh Koscheck, who was eager to get a big win after losing to Johny Hendricks. But the power in Lawler's hands knocked Koscheck out in the first round, and earned Lawler a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 3 star ? Dennis Bermudez: When the preliminary fights started, the Honda Center wasn't even half full. The UFC's tailgate was still going strong in the parking lot. But as Bermudez's bout with Matt Grice wore on, I noticed the stands filling up. Perhaps they heard about the Fight of the Year candidate happening inside, with Bermudez throwing everything he had at Grice, and Grice not only withstanding the punches but coming back with big punches of his own. They each took home a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

Who were your three stars from the night? Tell in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

BPA may affect the developing brain by disrupting gene regulation

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Environmental exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widespread chemical found in plastics and resins, may suppress a gene vital to nerve cell function and to the development of the central nervous system, according to a study led by researchers at Duke Medicine.

The researchers published their findings -- which were observed in cortical neurons of mice, rats and humans -- in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 25, 2013.

"Our study found that BPA may impair the development of the central nervous system, and raises the question as to whether exposure could predispose animals and humans to neurodevelopmental disorders," said lead author Wolfgang Liedtke, M.D., PhD, associate professor of medicine/neurology and neurobiology at Duke.

BPA, a molecule that mimics estrogen and interferes with the body's endocrine system, can be found in a wide variety of manufactured products, including thermal printer paper, some plastic water bottles and the lining of metal cans. The chemical can be ingested if it seeps into the contents of food and beverage containers.

Research in animals has raised concerns that exposure to BPA may cause health problems such as behavioral issues, endocrine and reproductive disorders, obesity, cancer and immune system disorders. Some studies suggest that infants and young children may be the most vulnerable to the effects of BPA, which led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ban the use of the chemical in baby bottles and cups in July 2012.

While BPA has been shown to affect the developing nervous system, little is understood as to how this occurs. The research team developed a series of experiments in rodent and human nerve cells to learn how BPA induces changes that disrupt gene regulation.

During early development of neurons, high levels of chloride are present in the cells. These levels drop as neurons mature, thanks to a chloride transporter protein called KCC2, which churns chloride ions out of the cells. If the level of chloride within neurons remains elevated, it can damage neural circuits and compromise a developing nerve cell's ability to migrate to its proper position in the brain.

Exposing neurons to minute amounts of BPA alters the chloride levels inside the cells by somehow shutting down the Kcc2 gene, which makes the KCC2 protein, thereby delaying the removal of chloride from neurons.

MECP2, another protein important for normal brain function, was found to be a possible culprit behind this change. When exposed to BPA, MECP2 is more abundant and binds to the Kcc2 gene at a higher rate, which might help to shut it down. This could contribute to problems in the developing brain due to a delay in chloride being removed.

These findings raise the question of whether BPA could contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders such as Rett syndrome, a severe autism spectrum disorder that is only found in girls and is characterized by mutations in the gene that produces MECP2.

While both male and female neurons were affected by BPA in the studies, female neurons were more susceptible to the chemical's toxicity. Further research will dig deeper into the sex-specific effects of BPA exposure and whether certain sex hormone receptors are involved in BPA's effect on KCC2.

"Our findings improve our understanding of how environmental exposure to BPA can affect the regulation of the Kcc2 gene. However, we expect future studies to focus on what targets aside from Kcc2 are affected by BPA," Liedtke said. "This is a chapter in an ongoing story."

In addition to Liedtke, study authors include Michele Yeo and Ken Berglund of the Liedtke Lab in the Division of Neurology at Duke Medicine; Michael Hanna, Maria D. Torres and Jorge Busciglio of the University of California, Irvine; Junjie U. Guo and Yuan Gao of the Lieber Institute for Brain Development and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.; and Jaya Kittur, Joel Abramowitz and Lutz Birnbaumer of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The research received funding from Duke University, the Klingenstein Fund, the National Institutes of Health (R21NS066307, HD38466 and AG16573), and intramural funds from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Asian stocks fall amid unease about US budget

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Tuesday amid anxiety about impending U.S. government spending cuts and the uncertain outcome of Italy's general election.

Oil dropped below $93 a barrel on concern about possible setbacks in all the major economic regions.

Japan's Nikkei 225 plunged 2.2 percent to 11,410.51 as the yen's recent weakness, which has boosted export stocks, reversed course. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.7 percent to 22,666.90. Seoul, Taipei and Sydney also suffered declines.

The only major market to buck the trend was China, where the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.3 percent to 2,333.90.

Investors were spooked by automatic U.S. spending cuts that hit this week and possible political instability in Italy following a general election.

In Asia, Chinese markets have drifted after Beijing ordered new efforts to cool housing prices, prompting fears of tighter monetary policy that might slow a gradual economic recovery. Investors also were dismayed by a survey that showed February factory activity slowing.

"As all three major economic areas face uncertainty, risk aversion has returned," said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

South Korea's Kospi declined 0.6 percent to 1,997.42, Taiwan's Taiex fell 0.5 percent to 7,905.90 and Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 gave up 0.8 percent to 5,015.4. India's Sensex was down 0.5 percent at 19,027.07. Benchmarks in Singapore, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta also declined.

Markets were volatile Monday amid uncertainty about the outcome of Italy's election. Exit polls suggested a center-left coalition might be able to form a government. But later polls showed a center-right group led by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi might win control of the upper house ? a scenario that might produce political deadlock and force new elections.

Berlusconi has promised to roll back some of the austerity measures introduced by technocrat prime minister Mario Monti. Heavily indebted Italy's stability is considered crucial to the future of the euro currency bloc and European leaders want Rome to enforce Monti's spending controls.

On Wall Street, the Dow fell 216.40 points, or 1.6 percent, to 13,784.17, its biggest drop since Nov. 7. The S&P 500 fell 27.75 points, or 1.8 percent, to 1,487.85, falling below 1,500 for the first time in three weeks. The Nasdaq composite dropped 45.57 points, or 1.4 percent, to 3,116.25

In China, investors were dismayed when HSBC Corp. said Monday a preliminary version of its purchasing managers index showed Chinese manufacturing unexpectedly fell in February to a four-month low and export orders declined.

China is recovering from its deepest slowdown since the 2008 but analysts say the rebound will be gradual and could be jeopardized if trade or investment falls.

Investors also are awaiting new U.S. data and remarks by Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke.

Last week, minutes from the Fed's latest policy meeting showed concern over monetary stimulus, stoking jitters in the markets.

In currency markets, the dollar was down 0.7 percent to 91.92 yen. But the yen, which has fallen by about 20 percent in recent weeks, is still much weaker than it was for most of last year. The euro was down 0.3 percent to $1.305.

Benchmark crude for April delivery was down 57 cents to $92.54 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract settled Monday at $93.11.

Mid-2013 expansion for Internet names targeted

FILE- In this Wednesday June 13, 2012, file photo, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN, President and Chief Executive Rod Beckstrom, speaks on expanding the number of domain name suffixes during a press conference in London. Hundreds of Internet address suffixes to rival ?.com? should be available for people and businesses to use by the end of the year, the head of an Internet oversight agency said Monday Feb. 25, 2013. (AP) ? Hundreds of Internet address suffixes to rival ".com" should be available for people and businesses to use by the end of the year, the head of an Internet oversight agency said Monday.

The initial ones, expected in mid-2013, will likely be in Chinese and other languages besides English, said Fadi Chehade, CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

That will be followed within weeks by English suffixes that do not have competing bidders. Although the specific names won't be announced until late April, they will come from a pool of single-bidder proposals ? among them, ".aetna," ''.cadillac" and other brand names sought by companies, regional monikers such as ".vegas" and ".quebec" and generic suffixes such as ".like" and ".vacation."

Many proposed suffixes, such as ".app," ''.music" and ".tech," will likely take longer, however, because multiple groups have submitted bids to run them and must work out disputes.

ICANN is overseeing the largest expansion of the Internet address system since its creation in the 1980s. Last year, nearly 2,000 businesses and groups submitted bids for about 1,400 different names. Proponents of the new suffixes are hoping the expansion will lead to online neighborhoods of businesses and groups around specific geographic areas or industries. And with easy-to-remember ".com" names long taken, they hope to offer Internet newcomers more choices.

In preparation for that expansion, Chehade said Monday that businesses and other trademark holders will be able to declare names they want protected, starting March 26, for an annual fee of up to $150 per name. IBM Corp. and Deloitte will run that system, known as the Trademark Clearinghouse.

Trademark holders will have a chance to register names ending in one of the new suffixes before registration opens to the general public. If a company chooses not to register the name right away, the Trademark Clearinghouse will notify the company when someone else tries to do so. The system, however, will not block that name from going through, and parties must work out disputes themselves, such as through arbitration.

Still to be determined is whether the system will cover variations such as misspellings or the use of a trademark as part of a longer suffix, as in "iPhoneCases." In an interview with The Associated Press, Chehade said ICANN did not want to restrict free speech or other legitimate uses.

From a technical standpoint, computers don't really care what the names are, as long as they match to a numeric Internet address that computers need to send email and locate websites.

From a business and cultural standpoint, however, the names have come to mean much more. Names are central to many companies' branding. And the Internet feels less global when Chinese, Arabic and Russian speakers have to use English characters as part of their Internet address.

ICANN received more than 100 proposals for names in other languages, the bulk of them for the Chinese equivalent of words such as "company" and "online." ICANN's board had agreed to review those first.

Proposals for about a thousand English suffixes have only one bidder, so those would be next in line. In making its recommendations, ICANN is considering the bidder's financial and technical capabilities, as well as any objections raised by the public.

Chehade said ICANN's initial recommendations are expected in late April, after which the winning bidders will work out operational and contractual details. The first of the new names are expected to be activated within months, with additional ones coming at a rate of about 20 a week.

For suffixes with multiple bidders, there is no deadline for which parties must reach agreement. ICANN plans to ultimately hold an auction if competing bidders cannot reach a compromise.

Meanwhile, ICANN said Monday that it would spread its operations to three locations around the world to cover all time zones. Headquarters will remain in Los Angeles, with hubs expected in Singapore and Istanbul, Turkey, by mid-2013. In an interview from Singapore, Chehade said the change would help ICANN avoid hiring a U.S.-centric staff as the Internet address system expands to accommodate users worldwide.

(AP) ? The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers picked up right where the two rivals left off in the playoffs last season.

Jakub Voracek scored the go-ahead goal with 1:31 remaining in the third period to cap his first career NHL hat trick, leading the Flyers to a wild 6-5 victory over the Penguins on Wednesday.

"It was a great game for the players, the fans, for everybody," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "It was good playoff-type hockey."

It was the kind of wide-open, back-and-forth, playoff-type hockey the two teams displayed during their Eastern Conference quarterfinal round series last season. The Penguins and Flyers combined for 45 goals through the first four games of the series, a best-of-seven set Philadelphia won in six games.

Pittsburgh took a two-goal lead Wednesday before Philadelphia scored the next four goals.

The Flyers had leads of 4-2 and 5-3 in the third period, only to watch as the Penguins rallied, tying the game with 2:03 remaining.

Voracek's third goal came 33 seconds after Pittsburgh's Brandon Sutter tied the game on a wraparound.

Voracek, who had a career-best four points Monday against the New York Islanders, threw a shot from behind the goal line, which bounced off Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun and into the net.

"I didn't want to turn it over or do something stupid, so I just tried to throw it to the net," Voracek said.

Voracek's first goal of the game came on the power play, giving the Flyers a 3-2 lead with 9.9 seconds left in the second period. His second, the 200th point of his NHL career, put Philadelphia ahead by two goals 18 seconds into the third period.

Wayne Simmonds had two goals and an assist and Nicklas Grossman also scored for the Flyers.

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves for his eighth victory.

Evgeni Malkin and James Neal scored power-play goals, while Sutter, Tyler Kennedy and Matt Niskanen also scored for the Penguins, who had a three-game win streak end.

Penguins defenseman Paul Martin also had three assists.

Captain Sidney Crosby, with 25 points, is tied with Buffalo's Thomas Vanek for NHL scoring lead after getting an assist.

Vokoun, making his first start since a home loss against New Jersey, stopped 26 shots.

"It's unfortunate," Crosby said. "We had a good start and didn't find a way to hold the lead."

The Flyers capped a season-long six-game road trip with two victories. Philadelphia, which routed the New York Islanders 7-0 Monday, struggled early on the road trip, dropping three of its first four games before recovering with two wins.

"Anytime you finish a road trip with two big wins it's huge," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who had two assists. "It was good to get a couple wins in a row again."

The Flyers, despite playing 12 of their first 18 games on the road, appear right at home in Pittsburgh, where they won for the eighth time in 10 games. Philadelphia is also 6-1 at Consol Energy Center since it opened in 2010.

Philadelphia appeared to put the game away after Simmonds' second goal of the game, which hit off Niskanen's stick and went into the net, to make it 5-3 at 7:36 of the third.

But the Penguins rallied thanks in part to back-to-back 5-on-3 power plays. Neal's power-play goal at 12:46 made it 5-4 and the Penguins appeared to initially tie it with 5:39 left, but a would-be power-play goal from Chris Kunitz was kicked past Bryzgalov.

Sutter got it done, tying the game with 2:03 remaining.

"We stuck with things and earned the breaks we got, and we were able to tie the game," Crosby said. "We had the right mentality, sometimes it's a little too late."

Niskanen gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 5:07 of the first, the 14th time in 17 games Pittsburgh scored the opening goal.

Defenseman Kris Letang's shot deflected off a Philadelphia skate to Niskanen, who ripped a hard shot past Bryzgalov.

Laviolette called a timeout after the goal in an attempt to spark his sluggish team, which had just two shots on goal to that point, but it worked in the Penguins' favor.

Flyers forward Harry Zolnierczyk was whistled for boarding 13 seconds later, putting Pittsburgh's No. 2-ranked power play on the ice.

Malkin nearly converted seven seconds into the advantage, as Bryzgalov gloved a shot against the post, but the play was ruled inconclusive after an extra look by officials.

No matter.

Malkin scored later on the power play at 7:15 of the first, slamming Martin's rebound off the end boards inside the post. It was the ninth straight game the Penguins scored a power-play goal.

The Flyers settled down, scoring twice in the span of a minute to tie the game.

Grossman got the first one, firing a loose puck across the line after a wild net-mouth scramble that had four Penguins piled in the crease, desperately trying to prevent a goal.

Letang tried his best to keep the puck out of the net, stopping the initial shot at the goal line, but it eventually popped out to Grossman, who scored the Flyers' opening goal 11:49 of the first.

Simmonds scored a minute later, taking a Danny Briere pass and powering his way to the top of the crease where he slid a shot past Vokoun.

Then things got heated between the cross-state rivals and the penalty box quickly filled with three players apiece less than a minute after the tying goal.

Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland went off for roughing, Flyers forward Brayden Schenn for cross-checking, and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were also issued while Tanner Glass and Simmonds had a fight.

"I think we got too emotional in the game, too involved with the extra curriculars," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said.

The teams played a clean second period, combining for just three penalties, but the last one, an elbowing call against the Penguins' Craig Adams, resulted in Voracek's go-ahead goal with 9.9 seconds left in the period.

Voracek scored his second of the game 18 seconds into the third period, taking advantage of a miscommunication between Vokoun and Martin behind the net. Braydon Coburn's shot after the turnover bounced to Voracek, who made it a two-goal game.

Kennedy cut the deficit to one goal at 5:29, putting the rebound from Martin's point shot behind Bryzgalov before Simmonds' scored his second of the game at 7:36.

"Obviously we started off pretty rocky, and kind of finished pretty rocky, but I think in between we played a pretty solid game," Simmonds said.

NOTES: Flyers forward Matt Read left the game with an upper-body injury. ... The rivals meet again March 7 in Philadelphia. ... Both teams play next at home against Florida. The Flyers host the Panthers Thursday, while the Pittsburgh welcomes Florida the following night.
