GREEN BAY, Wis. - Aaron Rodgers threw a go-ahead touchdown to Jordy Nelson in the fourth quarter, and the Green Bay Packers shook off a week's worth of controversy with a rally to beat the New Orleans Saints 28-27 on Sunday.

With Packers fans howling about what appeared to be yet another bad call ? this time by the regular officials, not the replacements ? Garrett Hartley missed a 48-yard field goal attempt with just under three minutes remaining, costing the Saints a shot at the lead.

Rodgers threw for 319 yards with four touchdowns and an interception for the Packers (2-2).

Drew Brees threw for 446 yards with three touchdowns for the winless Saints (0-4). Brees has thrown at least one touchdown in 47 straight regular-season games, tying the NFL's all-time mark set by Johnny Unitas.

With the win, the Packers were able to put Monday night's controversial replacement official-driven loss at Seattle behind them. But even with the regular refs back this week, the Packers and their fans still nearly were dealt a crushing blow on a blown call.

After Rodgers' touchdown to Nelson, Darren Sproles appeared to fumble the ensuing kickoff but officials ruled that he was down by contact. Replays showed that the ball clearly came out but the Packers were out of replay challenges, leaving Packers fans screaming at the officials for the second week in a row.

Brees then led the Saints into field goal range, and Hartley hit a 43-yard attempt ? but the Saints were called for holding, forcing Hartley to line up a 53-yarder. The Packers then were called for encroachment, leaving Hartley to try a 48-yarder and he missed it wide left.

It was a sigh of relief for the Packers, who spent most of the week in the middle of a nationwide firestorm after a last-second decision by replacement officials cost them a game at Seattle on Monday night. The play was a burden for the Packers to bear, but likely played a significant role in the NFL agreeing to a deal with its regular officials during the week.

Referee Jeff Triplette struck a triumphant tone during the pregame coin toss Sunday, announcing that "it's great to be back, gentlemen!" A handful of Packers fans came to the game dressed as officials, and some brought signs showing support for the regular refs.

The honeymoon didn't last long, though. Fans howled for an offensive pass interference call after Brees threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston late in the first quarter, but no flag was forthcoming. The boos intensified as a replay was shown on the stadium video boards.

With the Packers leading 21-14 in the third quarter, fans ? and Packers coach Mike McCarthy ? were on the officials again when McCarthy challenged a catch by Jimmy Graham but it wasn't overturned.

The Packers had too many men on the field for a Saints field attempt later in the drive, giving New Orleans first-and-goal on the 1. But the defense held, forcing a 20-yard field goal by Hartley to cut the lead to 21-17 with 9:41 left in the third quarter.

Rodgers marched the Packers down the field again but needed attention from the team's training staff after a face mask by New Orleans' Malcolm Jenkins. Rodgers came out of the game for one play and backup quarterback Graham Harrell came in ? then tripped and fumbled as he tried to hand it off, allowing the Saints to get the ball back in the middle of a scrum.

Brees then found Joseph Morgan wide open behind the defense, and Morgan shed tackling attempts from the Packers' Sam Shields and Tramon Williams on his way to an 80-yard touchdown and a 24-21 lead with 3:49 left in the third quarter.

Things then got even worse for the Packers, as Rodgers then threw an interception to Patrick Robinson on a deep throw intended for Jordy Nelson. Brees then completed a pair of third-and-long situations, and the Saints drove for a 27-yard field goal by Hartley to take a 27-21 lead with 13:04 remaining.

With the Packers trailing by 6, Rodgers threw an 11-yard strike to Nelson as the Saints' Corey White tried to wrap his arms around the ball at the same time as Nelson ? briefly re-creating a scene eerily similar to the controversial game-ender in Seattle on Monday. This time, though, Nelson clearly came away with the ball and spiked it emphatically.

Ten years ago, Washington-area snipers plunged region into terror

When the Washington-area snipers launched their shooting rampage a decade ago, Prince George's County restaurateur Paul LaRuffa suffered the same effects as everyone else: anxiety about leaving the house, fear of pumping gas, worry for loved ones ? all adding up to a general jumpiness about when, where and whom the gunmen would strike next.

But in LaRuffa's case ? though he didn't know it at the time ? there was a difference.

He had been the snipers' first victim.

A month before the shootings that terrorized the region, LaRuffa, then 55, had closed his restaurant in Clinton for the night, walked out with a couple of friends and got into his car.

He was about to pull out when 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo approached, raised a Bushmaster XM-15 E2S rifle and fired five .223-caliber rounds through the driver's side window.

The bullets pierced LaRuffa in the chest, abdomen and back.

As he staggered from his car, bleeding and breathless, he was bewildered.

"There was no relation to anything," he said last week. "Obviously, it was Sept. 5. There were no 'snipers.' It was a random, insane act of violence."

But within a month, that fear and confusion would spread throughout the area. It was 10 years ago this week that Malvo and his mentor, John Allen Muhammad, announced themselves with a burst of killings in Montgomery County and Washington.

The shootings on Oct. 2 and 3, 2002, left six dead in little more than 24 hours. Businesses closed; parents raced to schools to collect children.

Less than 13 months after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, an unknown enemy was again menacing the capital region. Security was increased at the Capitol, the White House and the Supreme Court; gas station owners hung tarps around their pumps to hide customers.

Ordinary citizens holed up in their homes. Those with unavoidable commitments ducked their heads as they scurried from house to car, from car to destination and back again.

Doug Duncan, the Montgomery County executive at the time, calls it the longest stretch of sustained terror in the United States since the Civil War.

"People were scared for their lives, as they should have been," he recalled last week. "It was three weeks of 'you could be killed at any time, just walking down the street, getting groceries, getting gas.' And you didn't know when the next shot was coming."

The shots kept coming ? and so, eventually, did the taunts: "Call me God," on a tarot card left at one shooting, and "Your children are not safe, anywhere, at any time."

The task force of local, state and federal law enforcement, meanwhile, appeared to be making little progress in identifying what at first was believed to be a single shooter.

By the time authorities caught up to Muhammad and Malvo, at a rest stop off Interstate 70 in Frederick County, 10 people in Maryland, Washington and Virginia were dead, three others were wounded, and the region was changed.

Carl Lejuez speaks of the emotional toll the shootings took. The professor of clinical psychology at the University of Maryland and director of its Center for Addictions, Personality and Emotion Research cites studies that show that extended periods of anxiety can cause more psychological and physical harm than actual trauma.

"There was never a moment where you were in DefCon 10 ? although I will tell you that when I had to pump gas, I kind of did it halfway in the car and halfway out," he said. "No one relaxed for three weeks. ... Long term, that's much worse than having gone through a traumatic event where maybe even someone was shooting at you."

The terror began on the evening of Oct. 2, when James D. Martin, a 55-year-old program analyst for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, was gunned down in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse in Wheaton.

France poised to unveil a budget heavy on taxes

PARIS (AP) ? France unveils its 2013 budget Friday, seen as a test of whether Socialist President Francois Hollande is serious about cutting government spending and reforming the country's economy.

Other countries in Europe are implementing harsh austerity, but France has largely held off on slashing its budget. Instead, it is expected to mostly to announce a slew of new taxes.

The measures are designed to reduce the government's deficit by ?30 billion ($39 billion), with only one-third of that in spending cuts.

Economists say raising taxes will only make it more important for Hollande to get serious about loosening the country's hidebound labor market.

Huge Sumatran quakes in April a step in tectonic plate breakup

Planet Earth may be 4.5 billion years old, but that doesn't mean she can't serve up a shattering surprise now and again.

Such was the case on April 11 of this year when two massive earthquakes erupted beneath the Indian Ocean, far from the usual danger zones. Now scientists say the seafloor ruptures are part of a long suspected, yet never before observed, event: the slow-motion splitting of a vast tectonic plate.

The first of the quakes, a magnitude 8.7, was 20 times more powerful than California's long anticipated "big one" and tore a complex network of faults deep in the ocean floor. The violence also triggered unusually large aftershocks thousands of miles away, including four off North America's western coast.

"It was jaw-dropping," said Thorn Lay, a professor of Earth and planetary sciences at UC Santa Cruz. "It was like nothing we'd ever seen."

At first, Lay wondered whether the computer code he used to analyze earthquakes was wrong. Eventually, he and other scientists realized that they had documented the break-up of the Indo-Australian plate into two pieces, an epic process that began roughly 50 million years ago and will continue for tens of millions more. Lay and other scientists reported their findings online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Most great earthquakes occur along plate borders, where one plate dives beneath the adjoining plate and sinks deep into Earth's mantle, a process called subduction. The April 11 quakes, however, occurred in the middle of the plate and involved a number strike-slip faults, meaning the ground on one side of the fault moves horizontally past ground on the other side.

Scientists say the 8.7 main shock broke four faults. The quake lasted 2 minutes and 40 seconds ? most last just seconds ? and was followed by a second 8.2 main shock two hours later.

Unlike the magnitude 9.1 temblor that struck in the same region on Dec. 26, 2004, and created a deadly tsunami, the April 11 quake did not cause similar destruction. That's because horizontally moving strike-slip faults do not induce the massive, vertical displacement of water that thrust faults do on the borders of plates.

The type of interplate faults involved in the Sumatran quakes are the result of monumental forces, some of which drove the continent of India into Asia millions of years ago and lifted the Himalayan Mountains. As the Indo-Australian plate continues to slide northwest, the western portion of the plate, where India is, has been grinding against and underneath Asia. But the eastern portion of the plate, which contains Australia, keeps on moving without the same obstruction. That difference creates squeezing pressure in the area where the quakes occurred.

The study authors say that over time, as more quakes occur and new ruptures appear, the cracks will eventually coalesce into a single fissure.

"This is part of the messy business of breaking up a plate," said University of Utah seismologist Keith Koper, senior author of one of the studies. "Most likely it will take thousands of similar large quakes for that to happen."

The quake was also notable for triggering powerful aftershocks thousands of miles away. While major quakes have been known to trigger aftershocks at great distance, they are usually less than 5.5 in magnitude. The April earthquake triggered 11 aftershocks that measured 5.5 or greater in the six days that followed the main shock, including one as big as magnitude 7. Remote shocks were felt 6,000 to 12,000 miles from the main quake.

Fred Pollitz, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., and lead author of one of the studies, said the quake was extremely effective in transmitting seismic wave radiation around the world. Though the magnitude of the Sumatran quake is No. 10 on the list of historic quakes, Pollitz said no other quake has triggered so many strong aftershocks so far away.

"It's the most powerful earthquake ever in terms of capability of putting stress on other fault zones around the world," he said.

Pollitz said the quake is likely to teach seismologists about the physics of earthquakes, particularly those along strike-slip faults. That knowledge, he said, would certainly apply to the San Andreas fault, which is also a strike-slip fault.

Lay said that the quake was most surprising in that it was completely unanticipated by seismologists and that he did not expect to event to repeat itself any time soon.

FP has never been afraid of asking difficult questions. What?s the capital of Belize? At what temperature does fluid helium I transition to superfluid helium II? How long is a piece of string? If a question needs asking, rest assured we?ll ask it. We?ve spent most of this week doggedly doorstepping wargame developers in an attempt to find out why, in 30-odd years of endeavour none of them have had the wit or wisdom to produce an FTL-style B-17 or Lancaster game.

Battlefront set their slavering German Shepherds on us (some of whom showed up with slavering Alsations). Matrix Games recommended we talk to Slitherine. Slitherine recommended we talk to Matrix Games. Shrapnel played dead until we got bored and went away. Graviteam politely suggested we get off our fat arses and make the thing ourselves. They plainly have no idea just how busy the average sim/wargame news-gathering cell is these days.

Train Triptych

September has been an unusually hectic/splendid month for those of us that use the ?A? and ?D? keys for tasks other than strafing. Run 8 had barely snaked onto the passing loop, when Train Simulator 2013?thundered into view. Last year?s free RailWorks/Train Simulator upgrade inserted bees into several bonnets by denting FPS figures and causing add-on issues in some quarters. This time the revamp has gone far more smoothly.

Though there are no big physics or signalling improvements, it?s hard not to be impressed by the substantial framerate gains, camera enhancements, and brighter, sharper visuals, the new version brings. The switch to the OpenAL audio engine is similarly welcome. Sounds now seem to overlap better, the aural consequences of lowering a window or entering a tunnel feel more natural.

Unexpectedly, I?m also rather taken with the new Quick Drive options. One button dab sets up a completely random run ? route, rolling stock, time of day, weather, all dice-derived. For those that sometimes find the myriad choices offered by super-expandable sims like TS a little overwhelming, it?s nice to be able to let the CPU take the selection strain occasionally. Faintly improbable combination of train and track? Press the button again, or treat it as an interesting back-story concoction challenge. I?m driving a 100-year-old steam shunter from contemporary Paddington to Oxford because?

One of the few mild disappointments is the continued lack of true multiplayer. TS2013 introduces something called Relay Play, but this is a pretty poor substitute relying as it does on the passing on of partially completed challenges to willing Steam friends. Improbably, Train Simulator?s ancient ancestor Microsoft Train Simulator has ended up getting MP before its replacement.

Thanks to the long-awaited version of Open Rails?released this week, those still loyal to MSTS now don?t have to roam steel roads alone. As the video below explains, the new build?s accomplishments also include tunnelier tunnels, fixed signalling, and an enhanced GUI. You may still encounter problems getting a favourite add-on to function, but the Open Rails dream?- a free evolving train sim compatible with MSTS add-ons but unfettered by MSTS limitations ? seems closer than ever. You still need an MSTS install to use OR but the day when the sim becomes standalone, relying wholly on bundled community-made routes and rolling stock, is surely not far away.

I?m the sort of person that keeps a roll of hazard tape in the back of his car just in case. If I ever rounded a corner and found a windblown tree, jack-knifed lorry, or cracked nuclear-waste flask blocking the road, I?d have hopped out and sealed off the area before you could say ?Thank goodness wonderful, socially-minded people like that exist. We?d nominate him for some sort of civil bravery award if we didn?t suspect his incredible modesty, catalogue of outstanding parking fines, and vitriolic hatred of authority figures would prevent him from accepting it?.

In theory I should be slap-bang in the middle of the Disaster Response Unit (aka THW Simulator) demographic. This German sim simulates seeks to simulate the activities of a worthy voluntary organisation called the THW. When these admirable lads and lasses aren?t building refugee camps in Africa, assisting in earthquake rescues in Asia, or plucking scared kitties from window ledges in D?sseldorf they are usually to be found (and I?m speculating here) weeping into their wheat-beers because the game devoted to them has turned out a bit Schei?e.

To be fair, the above assessment is based on my experience of DRU?s first mission and training area only. After an hour of cone placing, log bulldozing, and physics voodoo, I?d had more than enough.

The training yard is completely enclosed by stout brick walls and an unopenable steel gate but that didn?t stop me accidentally escaping its confines on two occasions. My unauthorised excursions taught me a very valuable lesson:

No amount of hi-vis clothing and hydraulic lifting gear will save you if you decide to drive off The Edge of the World.

The volatile look-at-me-funny-and-I?ll-hurl-you-over-that-haus physics might have been easier to overlook had there been a degree of problem-solving involved in the disaster scenarios. Instead, the game fusses terribly, insisting certain vehicles are parked in certain spots, and jobs are tackled in a specific order. Unless DRU II offers a lot more tactical freedom and a lot less vehicle acrobatics, in future I?ll be leaving the flood defence building and the puss plucking to others.

Tigers bounce back with 6-2 win over Royals

DETROIT (AP) ? The potential tying run was on third with one out in the fifth inning, and Justin Verlander was suddenly in pain. A routine throw back to the pitcher had gone array, and the Detroit ace hurt his non-throwing shoulder lunging to stop it.

It looked like the kind of freakish bad break the Tigers could ill afford.

"With a guy on third and the ball coming back on the ground, I've got to try to stop it," Verlander said. "So I went down to get it, and my body just wasn't prepared for that. All my weight landed on my left arm, and just kind of jarred my shoulder a little bit. I felt it for a little bit and then it went away."

Verlander was able to stay in the game, and not only did he pitch out of that jam, but he went eight innings to help Detroit beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday night. The Tigers remained a game behind the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox, who beat Cleveland 5-4.

The Tigers were swept in a doubleheader by Minnesota on Sunday but steadied themselves behind their top pitcher. Verlander (16-8) had little trouble with the Royals, who knocked him around for eight runs and 12 hits last month.

The right-hander allowed two runs and nine hits this time, striking out eight without a walk. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth.

Verlander threw 114 pitches, 89 for strikes.

"He just threw strike after strike after strike. There's not much you can do when he's throwing like that," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We had a couple good at-bats against him, but he was extremely good tonight. You just need to get lucky when he's going that well, and we didn't."

Luke Hochevar (8-15) yielded six runs ? five earned ? and 12 hits in 7 1-3 innings.

Alex Gordon homered for Kansas City.

The Tigers play three more games at home against the Royals before finishing the regular season with a six-game trip to Minnesota and Kansas City.

Prince Fielder hit a solo homer for Detroit in the second, and Alex Avila added an RBI double later in the inning.

Gordon's 12th home run in the fourth cut the lead in half, and the Royals appeared poised to tie it in the fifth when they put runners on first and third with one out.

With Jarrod Dyson batting, Verlander hurt his shoulder in bizarre fashion. Avila, the catcher, was making a routine throw back to the pitcher when his arm collided with the hand of plate umpire Bill Welke, causing the ball to scoot low across the ground in front of the mound. Verlander lunged to stop it and grimaced as he got up.

"I gave myself a little bit of a scare ? and everybody else," Verlander said. "But it's my left arm. Maybe I can throw with it just dangling. Who knows?"

He struck out Dyson and Alcides Escobar to end the threat.

The Tigers padded their lead in the bottom half with another wacky play. With runners on first and second, Austin Jackson hit an RBI double down the right-field line, and another run came home when Jeff Francoeur's throw to second skipped away for an error. Gordon, the left fielder, retrieved the ball and easily threw out Jackson trying to advance to third ? earning an assist on a play that began on the opposite side of the outfield.

"We try to entertain everybody," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We try to give everybody a good piece of entertainment."

Andy Dirks made it 5-1 with an RBI single in the sixth.

Billy Butler had three hits for the Royals, including an RBI single in the eighth. He's hitting .396 (21 for 53) off Verlander.

Dirks answered with another RBI single of his own.

Miguel Cabrera singled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, but the Detroit slugger no longer leads the American League in home runs. He fell behind Josh Hamilton of Texas, meaning Cabrera will need to make up ground in his Triple Crown chase.

Before I even start, let me stress something I have had to reject over five profiles because of three things:
1) Lack of literacy
2) Not following the rules( ONCE AGAIN READ THE QUESTION,ANSWERS,AND RULES AS WELL AS THE INTRODUCTION)
3) and unoriginal characters

I will not accept you just because you submit to me. If you are only posting four sentences at the most, and all your characters are the same I can only assume you will not put effort into this role play.

I have others who have put time, effort, and their thought into the creation of their characters. Please, if you are not able to meet the qualifications to be accepted, do not wast my time.

I do not mean to come off as rude, but it is unfair to others who are ready to shape a role play if you are only joining because this has the chance of turning into a romance. I can see from how you outline your profile how you will structure your post, as well looking over your writer stats.

I have said literacy was a requirement, as well as the ability as post a minimum of three paragraphs. I take this very seriously. I do not want other role players to become annoyed or lose interest because of lack of responses .

They say the world through a child's eyes is pure, free of judgement, and simple...and maybe they are right. It was,after all, during their years as children that they made the bonds that would follow them into their adult years. Of course, looking back they never would have guess their friendship would impact their lives in such a way. They were simply kids doing what kids do best...having fun.

Evenings spent crowded together in a fort made just of old sheets and some throw pillows could become anything they wished. Inside their fortress they could be anything they wanted: Pirates defending a treasure,knights rescuing damsels in distress,and explores discovering new creatures lurking in the shadows. As day light faded and darkness over took, their fun was yet to be done. Picture shows became their source of amusement, their shadows acting as the performers. There was no judgement....there was no hate...they were only kids, who for a moment, could create a world of their own.

That's the joy of being a child. You don't need music to make you dance, alcohol to relax you, or drugs to make you fly...all you need is a place to call your own, a good imagination, and a few good friends who will stand by you.

What is Stand By Me about?
Stand By Me: a role play based on life is an interactive role play in which the characters create the plot. They start of a children and over time create bonds,have adventures, and discover themselves through one another.

Of course, that would make things too simply...am I right? Things become more difficult as the characters grow. Life becomes more than just playing tag and building forts. They will struggle though the difficulties of everyday life, while trying to hold on to the friendship they have come to rely on. Some may move away, some may drift apart, and some may stay together, but one fact will stay the same throughout this role play....

Now comes the part where I explain who I am looking to create such a role play with. Of course we all hate this part, but as much as I hate to say it...some people do not have the dedication to stay with a role play.

*Literacy. I can not stress this enough. I am extremely tired of reading short and choppy sentences. Not everyone can write five-eight paragraph responses, and that is perfectly fine, but I promise you, it is possible to write an amazing post with a minimal of three paragraphs if you know how.

* Commitment is the key. It doesn't matter how many role players you have, everyone plays an important part. I beg you, if you join this role play, stick it out through the end...or at least tell us if you will no longer participate.

*A willingness to move the role play forward on your own. If you feel things are dragging on...push them forward.

*Imagination. That pretty much speaks for itself.

Profile sheets:
Since this is a role play based on characters, I feel it should be free range. Create the character you want using whatever profile sheet you wish. Have fun with it. I will assume the effort you put into the creation of your character is the same you will give during the role play, so take your time and make it wroth reading.

'Cult Fiction' Traced to Ancient Egypt Priest

A recently deciphered Egyptian papyrus from around 1,900 years ago tells a fictional story that includes drinking, singing, feasting and ritual sex, all in the name of the goddess Mut.?

Researchers believe that a priest wrote the blush-worthy tale, as a way to discuss controversial ritual sex acts with other priests.

"Our text may represent a new and hitherto unrecognized Egyptian literary genre: 'cult' fiction, the purpose of which was to allow controversial or contentious matters pertaining to the divine cult to be scrutinized in this way," wrote professors Richard Jasnow and Mark Smith, who published their translation and analysis of the papyrus in the most recent edition of the journal Enchoria.

Jasnow, from Johns Hopkins University, and Smith, from Oxford, write that evidence of ritual sex is? rare in ancient Egypt and the act probably would have been controversial. "There is surprisingly little unequivocal Egyptian evidence for the performance of the sex act as such in ritual contexts," Jasnow and Smith wrote. [The Sex Quiz: Myths, Taboos & Bizarre Facts]

They added that the Egyptians were known to discuss other controversial matters using fictional stories.

Writing about sex

Containing writing in a form of ancient Egyptian known as Demotic, the papyrus is likely to have originated in the Fayum village of Tebtunis at a time when the Romans controlled Egypt. It is currently in Florence, Italy, in the Istituto Papirologico "G. Vitelli."

The newly deciphered tale refers several times to having sex. At one point a speaker implores a person to "drink truly. Eat truly. Sing" and to "don clothing, anoint (yourself), adorn the eyes, and enjoy sexual bliss." The speaker adds that Mut will not let you "be distant from drunkenness on any day. She will not allow you to be lacking in any (manner)."

The speaker defends his views by saying, "As for those who have called me evil, Mut will 'call' them evil."

Researchers know the story is fictional because it employs an Egyptian noun used only in fiction to mark separate sections of a story. ?

The full story

Reconstructing the overall plot narrative of the papyrus is tricky. The text is fragmentary, and researchers cannot be certain how the full story unfolded.

"Conceivably, we have here the remains of an account of how an adherent of the goddess Mut persuaded another individual to devote himself to her worship or join in her rites," the researchers write.??

This "cult fiction" interpretation of the papyrus is backed up by the Greek writer Herodotus, who lived more than 2,400 years ago. He wrote that "it was the Egyptians who first made it a matter of religious observance not to have intercourse with women in temples, nor enter a temple after such intercourse without washing." (That translation is from "Herodotus Volume 1," Harvard University Press, 1990.)

For some ancient Egyptians, the idea of mixing sex and religion may have been extreme, a problem priests discussed by way of a fictional story.

Smith declined an interview request, telling LiveScience that everything the researchers wanted to say is in the journal article. He did add that new fragments of the papyrus recently were discovered, and they may allow for more of the story to be deciphered.

For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

Brent crude drops below $111 on renewed growth jitters

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude futures fell below $111 a barrel on Monday, dragged down by a firm dollar and worries about weak economic growth in key consumer nations.

Although central banks in the United States, Europe and Japan have announced measures aimed at keeping asset markets well supplied with funds, growth concerns have overtaken the initial elation following the stimulus announcements.

"The optimism (over the measures) is gone and investors are starting to realize it's not backed by good economic data," said Jonathan Barratt, chief executive of BarrattBulletin, a commodity research firm in Sydney.

"Investors are not confident, that is why they're punishing commodities, including oil."

Front-month Brent futures had fallen 88 cents to $110.56 by 0634 GMT, while U.S. crude futures were 70 cents lower at $92.19 per barrel. Both contracts shed more than $1 in early trade.

Brent dropped 4.5 percent last week, while U.S. crude lost 6.2 percent on demand worries as well as a pledge by Saudi Arabia to keep prices down.

GROWTH VS STIMULUS

A firm dollar, which makes commodities denominated in the greenback more expensive for investors in other currencies, also deterred buying, adding to the pressure on oil futures.

The dollar index <.dxy> rose 0.3 percent on Monday as the euro reeled under increasing uncertainties in Spain and Greece, and other Asian currencies gave way to profit booking.

The markets had been supported for most of the month by the announcement of a third-round of quantitative easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve, increasing tensions in the Middle East between Iran and Israel and delays in North Sea oil shipments.

The Fed and the Bank of Japan launched fresh monetary easing steps in recent weeks, while the European Central Bank adopted a plan to buy bonds from euro zone states requesting assistance, to help drive down borrowing costs.

While all markets rallied following the announcement, the focus has once again shifted to worries on the euro zone debt crisis, as well as weakness in the United States and key Asian consumers such as China and India.

"The Fed and the ECB actions (have) helped buy time but are not game changers," Bank of America-Merrill Lynch analysts said in a report late on Friday.

"After a welcome relief trade, the risks from both sides of the Atlantic will grow as year-end approaches, in our view."

MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS

Escalating tension in the Middle East offered some support to prices, after Iran hinted at the possibility of a pre-emptive strike on Israel.

"Iran will not start any war but it could launch a pre-emptive attack if it was sure that the enemies are putting the final touches to attack it," Amir Ali Hajizadeh, a brigadier general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told Iran's state-run radio on Sunday.

Global oil markets are already feeling the force of lower supplies after a western embargo on Iran oil shipments and any heightening of tensions could rattle markets further.

"The Iran story is far from over," said Jason Schenker, president of Prestige Economics in Austin, Texas.

"The implications for crude oil prices could be bullish, as could the impact on the greenback."

Adding to supply worries are the delays in North Sea shipments, especially in view of increased demand during winter in the Northern hemisphere.

Export delays in September and October are the most significant since May's loading program, when 11 Forties cargoes out of 19 originally planned were deferred, according to Reuters records based on information from trade sources.

Scientists predict major shifts in Pacific ecosystems by 2100

What if you woke up every day to find that the closest grocery store had moved several miles farther away from your home? Over time, you would have to travel hundreds of extra miles to find essential food for yourself and your family. This is potentially a scenario faced by thousands of marine animals affected by climate change.

A new study published in Nature Climate Change examines the distribution of various open ocean animals in the North Pacific and explores how that could change over the next century as global ocean temperatures increase and productivity levels shift. The researchers conclude that some critical ocean habitats could undergo significant changes in location, moving more than 600 miles from where they are now, while other habitats could remain relatively unchanged.

Among large animals, loggerhead turtles, some sharks and blue whales may face the harshest impacts of climate change while some seabirds may actually benefit. Not only are species at risk, but also coastal communities and industries could feel the impact since top predator habitat shifts can result in the displacement of fisheries and ecotourism, such as whale watching.

"For species already stressed by overfishing or other human impacts, increased migration time and loss of habitat could be a heavy blow," said Elliott Hazen, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researcher on the project who is affiliated with the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford. "But if we can build some plausible scenarios of how marine ecosystems may change, this may help efforts to prioritize and proactively manage them."

In order to carry out their study, the authors employed complex mathematical models with data from the decade-long "Tagging of Pacific Predators" (TOPP) project, in which 4,300 electronic tags placed on 23 species from 2000 to 2009 created unprecedented insight into migration patterns and hotspots of predator species in the northern Pacific.

Satellite measurements of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a (used to estimate surface productivity) were combined with the tracking data to identify "key habitat areas" for a variety of different ocean predators. The researchers then used climate models of ocean temperature and productivity to ascertain how those key habitat areas might change in the face of ocean warming.

One of these key habitat areas, known as the North Pacific Transition Zone, marks the interface between cold, nutrient-rich polar water to the north and warmer, nutrient-poor water to the south. This region is used by a variety of ocean predators, including marine mammals, tunas and seabirds, as a corridor across the Pacific Ocean basin. The study suggests that this critical region could shift by as much as 600 miles, resulting in a 20 percent loss of species diversity in the region.

Other critical habitat areas, however, may experience little or no impact. The California Current, which runs along the west coast of North America, supports a variety of open ocean predators each year, when cold, nutrient-rich water creates regions of high productivity. This so-called upwelling cycle would likely continue despite ocean warming. "The fact that tagging indicates this is the number one lunch stop in town along the most populous coast in the nation and stabilizes in a warming world increases our opportunity to consider how to protect these hot spots," said Barbara Block, the Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Professor in Marine Sciences at Stanford, who is heavily involved in TOPP.

Among the Pacific's top predators, turtles, sharks and marine mammals such as whales appear to be most at risk from habitat shifts associated with Pacific warming. In some cases, predicted losses in essential habitat ranged as high as 35 percent.

But animals such as seabirds and tunas may benefit from climate-change-related shifts that could actually increase their potential habitat for foraging due to their broader tolerances to temperature.

"The differences from one species to another is their ability to adapt to temperatures and to use multiple ocean areas," said Hazen. "Having multiple sources of food, migration corridors and areas to call home provides a buffer against climate variability and change."

"Modeling of future scenarios is used in national security, financial investing and other critical areas," said Larry Crowder, the science director of the Center for Ocean Solutions, who was involved in the study.

"Here we use it to envision climate change impacts on large predators in the Pacific so that steps can be taken to better manage species that are important both commercially and for conservation goals," he said.

Based on these predictions, marine and coastal managers may alter fishing catches or revamp marine protected areas.
