Speedy boson machine could bridge classic and quantum computing

19 hrs.

A new type of machine could rival quantum computers in exceeding the power of classical computers, researchers say.

Quantum computers?rely on the bizarre properties of atoms and the other construction blocks of the universe. The world is a fuzzy place at its very smallest levels ? in this realm where?quantum physics?dominates, things can seemingly exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.

The new computers rely on "boson" particles, and resemble quantum computers, which differ from traditional computers in important ways. Normal computers represent data as ones and zeroes, binary digits known as bits that are expressed by flicking switch-like transistors on or off. Quantum computers, however, use quantum bits, or qubits (pronouced "cue-bits"), that can be on and off at the same time, a state known as "superposition."

This allows the machines to carry out two calculations simultaneously. Quantum physics permits such behavior because it allows for particles that can exist in two places at once or spin in opposite directions at the same time.?[Experiment Demonstrates Possibility of Quantum Internet]

Flash interactive: How quantum computers work

In principle, quantum computers could solve certain problems much faster than can?classical computers, because the quantum machines could run through every possible combination at once. A quantum computer with 300 qubits could run more calculations in an instant than there are atoms in the universe.

However, keeping qubits in superposition is challenging, and the problem grows more difficult as more qubits are involved. As such, building quantum computers that are more powerful than classical computers has proven very difficult.

Now, though, two independent teams of scientists have built a novel kind of device known as a boson-sampling computer. Described as a bridge between classical and quantum computers, these machines also make use of the bizarre nature of quantum physics. Although boson-sampling computers theoretically offer less power than quantum computers are capable of producing, the machines should still, in principle, out-perform classical computers in certain problems.

In addition, a boson-sampling computer does not require qubits. As such, "it's technologically far simpler to create than building a full-scale quantum computer," said researcher Matthew Broome, a quantum physicist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Boson-sampling computers are actually a specialized kind of quantum computer (which is known more formally as a universal quantum computer).

"The main difference between boson-sampling computers and universal quantum computers is that boson-sampling quantum computers can't solve a universal set of problems like universal quantum computers can," Broome said. "But they are still conjectured to be able to solve problems that would be massively intractable for classical computers. Boson sampling computers are an intermediate model of a quantum computer."

Boson-sampling computers are not based on qubits, but on particles called?bosons. "In our case, we use photons," said researcher Ian Walmsley, a quantum physicist at the University of Oxford in England. Photons are the packets of energy that make up light, and are one type of boson.

Gallery: What the heck is a boson?

Broome and Walmsley were in separate groups that each devised a boson-sampling computer, based off concepts first described by theoretical computer scientist Scott Aaronson at MIT. The computers involve multiple devices that can each generate single photons. The photons are inserted into a network where they can interact with one another. They emerge from outputs equipped with sensors to analyze the particles.

The task of calculating which outputs these photons will emerge from, an operation known as boson sampling, grows well beyond the capabilities of classical computers the more photons are involved. The new computers accurately resolved what paths the photons would take ? three photons with Broome and his colleagues' machine and four in Walmsley and his collaborators' device.

Since boson-sampling computing is in its infancy, it remains uncertain whether these computers can solve problems beyond boson sampling. Still, this research suggests that computers based on quantum physics could indeed tackle problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

Year in Science: Higgs boson takes the prize

Previously, there was nothing to say "that anything you can do on a quantum computer you can't do on a normal computer, which leaves in question the necessity for quantum computers," Broome said. "Now, with boson sampling, we're coming up with machines based on quantum physics that can attack problems strongly believed to be intractable for classical computers."

In the future, "it would be great to push these computers toward more photons to tackle problems that would be challenging to simulate on normal computers," study coauthor Walmsley added. Using about 20 to 30 photons would?be a problem?beyond the capabilities of classical computers.

Both research teams detailed their findings online Dec. 20 in the journal Science.

Strange behavior: New study exposes living cells to synthetic protein

Dec. 27, 2012 ? One approach to understanding components in living organisms is to attempt to create them artificially, using principles of chemistry, engineering and genetics. A suite of powerful techniques -- collectively referred to as synthetic biology -- have been used to produce self-replicating molecules, artificial pathways in living systems and organisms bearing synthetic genomes.

In a new twist, John Chaput, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute and colleagues at the Department of Pharmacology, Midwestern University, Glendale, AZ have fabricated an artificial protein in the laboratory and examined the surprising ways living cells respond to it.

"If you take a protein that was created in a test tube and put it inside a cell, does it still function," Chaput asks. "Does the cell recognize it? Does the cell just chew it up and spit it out?" This unexplored area represents a new domain for synthetic biology and may ultimately lead to the development of novel therapeutic agents.

The research results, reported in the advanced online edition of the journal ACS Chemical Biology, describe a peculiar set of adaptations exhibited by Escherichia coli bacterial cells exposed to a synthetic protein, dubbed DX. Inside the cell, DX proteins bind with molecules of ATP, the energy source required by all biological entities.

"ATP is the energy currency of life," Chaput says. The phosphodiester bonds of ATP contain the energy necessary to drive reactions in living systems, giving up their stored energy when these bonds are chemically cleaved. The depletion of available intracellular ATP by DX binding disrupts normal metabolic activity in the cells, preventing them from dividing, (though they continue to grow).

After exposure to DX, the normally spherical E. coli bacteria develop into elongated filaments. Within the filamentous bacteria, dense intracellular lipid structures act to partition the cell at regular intervals along its length. These unusual structures, which the authors call endoliposomes, are an unprecedented phenomenon in such cells.

"Somewhere along the line of this filamentation, other processes begin to happen that we haven't fully understood at the genetic level, but we can see the results phenotypically," Chaput says. "These dense lipid structures are forming at very regular regions along the filamented cell and it looks like it could be a defense mechanism, allowing the cell to compartmentalize itself." This peculiar adaptation has never been observed in bacterial cells and appears unique for a single-celled organism.

Producing a synthetic protein like DX, which can mimic the elaborate folding characteristics of naturally occurring proteins and bind with a key metabolite like ATP is no easy task. As Chaput explains, a clever strategy known as mRNA display was used to produce, fine-tune and amplify synthetic proteins capable of binding ATP with high affinity and specificity, much as a naturally occurring ATP-binding protein would.

First, large libraries of random sequence peptides are formed from the four nucleic acids making up DNA, with each strand measuring around 80 nucleotides in length. These sequences are then transcribed into RNA with the help of an enzyme -- RNA polymerase. If a natural ribosome is then introduced, it attaches to the strand and reads the random sequence RNA as though it was a naturally-occurring RNA, generating a synthetic protein as it migrates along the strand. In this way, synthetic proteins based on random RNA sequences can be generated.

Exposing the batch of synthetic proteins to the target molecule and extracting those that bind can then select for ATP-binding proteins. But as Chaput explains, there's a problem: "The big question is how do you recover that genetic information? You can't reverse transcribe a protein back into DNA. You can't PCR amplify a protein. So we have to do all these molecular biology tricks."

The main trick involves an earlier step in the process. A molecular linker is chemically attached to the RNA templates, such that each RNA strand forms a bond with its newly translated protein. The mRNA-protein hybrids are exposed to selection targets (like ATP) over consecutive rounds of increasing stringency. After each round of selection, those library members that remain bound to the target are reverse-transcribed into cDNA (using their conveniently attached RNA messages), and then PCR amplified.

In the current study, E. coli cells exposed to DX transitioned into a filamentous form, which can occur naturally when such cells are subject to conditions of stress. The cells display low metabolic activity and limited cell division, presumably owing to their ATP-starved condition.

The study also examined the ability of E. coli to recover following DX exposure. The cells were found to enter a quiescent state known as viable but non-culturable (VBNC), meaning that they survived ATP sequestration and returned to their non-filamentous state after 48 hours, but lost their reproductive capacity. Further, this condition was difficult to reverse and seems to involve a fundamental reprogramming of the cell.

In an additional response to DX, the filamentous cells form previously undocumented structures, which the authors refer to as endoliposomes. These dense lipid concentrations, spanning the full width of the filamented E. coli, segment the cells into distinct compartments, giving the cells a stringbean-like appearance under the microscope.

The authors speculate that this adaptation may be an effort to maintain homeostasis in regions of the filamentous cell, which have essentially been walled off from the intrusion of ATP-depleting DX. They liken endoliposomes to the series of water-tight compartments found in submarines which are used to isolate damaged sections of the ship and speculate that DX-exposed cells are partitioning their genetic information into regions where it can be safely quarantined. Such self-compartmentalization is known to occur in some eukaryotic cells, but has not been previously observed in prokaryotes like E. coli.

The research indicates that there is still a great deal to learn about bacterial behavior and the repertoire of responses available when such cells encounter novel situations, such as an unfamiliar, synthetic protein. The study also notes that many infectious agents rely on a dormant state, (similar to the VBNC condition observed in the DX-exposed E. coli), to elude detection by antibiotics. A better understanding of the mechanisms driving this behavior could provide a new approach to targeting such pathogens.

The relative safety of E. coli as a model organism for study may provide a fruitful tool for more in-depth investigation of VBNC states in pathogenic organisms. Further, given ATP's central importance for living organisms, its suppression may provide another avenue for combating disease. One example would be an engineered bacteriophage capable of delivering DX genes to pathogenic organisms.

Amy D. Waterman, Ph.D.: The Beginning

I first started coming to Pasadena, California to decorate the Donate Life Rose Parade Float in December, 2009. I was tired and in pain. My husband had left me in November, asking for a divorce. I didn't bother to get a tree. I didn't want to open the red and green tubs filled with stockings, snow globes and red velvet tablecloths. I couldn't fake the holiday spirit -- I was nowhere near it.

Seeing my sadness, a friend of mine responsible for decorating and launching a float about organ and tissue donation in the Rose Parade saw an opportunity. "Come out to Pasadena and help us decorate our float," he said. "I don't know how, but I promise it will help you." So I flew out, arrived on a sunny, Southern California day, and was given a sky blue Donate Life volunteer t-shirt to wear. I put it on gratefully, happy to be an anonymous volunteer instead of Amy Waterman, whose life had just combusted around her.

One of the lead event coordinators put me to work in a hotel ballroom. I lined up nametags in alphabetical order, laid out individual tissue packs onto the tables, and checked in all the people that we were there to honor. They looked pretty ordinary to me -- a group of people like those you might see if you got on a bus. They were from everywhere, of all ages and ethnicities. Some were frail, walking with canes or in wheelchairs. There were a few children. These were the Donate Life float riders and their families, the two dozen people representing the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives are touched every year by the cause of organ and tissue donation. On New Year's Day, they would ride the float waving to the world, inspiring up to 40 million people.

After dinner, each float rider stood up and told their story. I met a 12-year old girl who received a heart transplant 11 days after her birth. One gentle man, Manuel Salazar, had been electrocuted in a work accident, where his arms and legs were completely burned off. He shared about receiving bone grafts so that he could maneuver his wheelchair without assistance. Other family members shared about the moment where, in an instant, they lost someone they loved in a car accident or to a shooting or brain aneurism. One woman, Carolyn Bryant, died while nine months pregnant. Thirteen years later, her son Carter, delivered by C-section one day before her death, would be riding the Donate Life float in her honor, sitting beside the recipient of his mother's liver, Tyla Newbold.

The room was deeply quiet that night as one by one, stories were shared. We cried, as a community, for what was lost and what was gained. At the end of the evening, each rider signed commemorative Rose Parade posters so that each rider could take one home to frame. Manuel signed each copy with a Sharpie marker held in his mouth.

The 2010 Donate Life float featured a phoenix, rising majestically from the ashes. Ringing its neck were floral pictures of those who had donated organs, tissues and bone in their passing. That year, in between my volunteer duties, I would stop and look up at the phoenix rising triumphantly above me in the air. Early on the morning of January 1, I helped the float riders get seated underneath its wings. As they buckled in, I said, "We love you." "We love you, too," many of the riders said back to me. And then they were off for their ride of a lifetime -- a five-mile journey down Colorado Boulevard, smiling and waving in front of 800,000 parade spectators and tens of millions more watching on television.

Afterwards, I went home to St. Louis. I signed the divorce paperwork, figured out how to unstop a toilet, and kept writing papers towards achieving tenure at my university. Thinking of the people I had met at on the float, I could keep living if they could. It was just a divorce.

This week, I will be back in Pasadena to help launch the 2013 Donate Life float, themed, "Journeys of the Heart." One thousand people touched by our cause will place tens of thousands of roses, mums and orchids on the float. A new class of 32 float riders, 72 floragraph families and 3000 individually dedicated roses will represent organ and tissue donors and recipients nationally. Our float's central image, two intertwined hearts, will stand above us: a beacon of what is good and hopeful about humanity. We begin again, as we must, standing strong against pain, loss and resignation.

Watch the Rose Parade at 8 a.m. PST on January 1, 2013 to experience Donate Life's "Journeys of the Heart."

Americans hand Obama a second term, challenges await

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama won a second term in the White House on Tuesday, overcoming deep doubts among voters about his handling of the U.S. economy to score a clear victory over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Americans chose to stick with a divided government in Washington, by keeping the Democratic incumbent in the White House and leaving the U.S. Congress as it is, with Democrats controlling the Senate and Republicans keeping the House of Representatives.

Obama told thousands of supporters in Chicago who cheered his every word that "we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back" and that for America, the best is yet to come.

He vowed to listen to both sides of the political divide in the weeks ahead and said he would return to the White House more determined than ever to confront America's challenges.

"Whether I earned your vote or not, I have listened to you, I have learned from you. And you have made me a better president," Obama said.

The nationwide popular vote remained extremely close with Obama taking about 50 percent to 49 percent for Romney after a campaign in which the candidates and their party allies spent a combined $2 billion.

Romney, the multimillionaire former private equity executive, came back from a series of campaign stumbles to make it close after besting the president in the first of three presidential debates.

The 65-year-old former Massachusetts governor conceded in a gracious speech delivered to disappointed supporters at the Boston convention center. He had called Obama to concede defeat after a brief controversy over whether the president had really won Ohio.

"This is a time of great challenge for our nation," Romney told the crowd. "I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation."

He warned against partisan bickering and urged politicians on both sides to "put the people before the politics."

Obama told his crowd that he hoped to sit down with Romney in the weeks ahead and examine ways to meet the challenges ahead.

The president Obama scored impressive victories in the crucial state of Ohio and heavily contested swing states of Virginia, Nevada, Iowa and Colorado. They carried the Democrat past the 270 electoral votes needed for victory in America's state-by-state system of choosing a president, and left Romney's senior advisers shell-shocked at the loss.

Obama, America's first black president, won by convincing voters to stick with him as he tries to reignite strong economic growth and recover from the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s. An uneven recovery has been showing some signs of strength but the country's 7.9 percent jobless rate remains stubbornly high.

Obama's victory in the hotly contested swing state of Ohio - as projected by TV networks - was a major step in the fight for the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the White House and ended Romney's hopes of pulling off a string of swing-state upsets.

Obama scored narrow wins in Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire - all states that Romney had contested - while the only swing state captured by Romney was North Carolina, according to television network projections.

Romney initially delayed his concession as some Republicans questioned whether Obama had in fact won Ohio despite the decisions by election experts at all the major TV networks to declare it for the president.

The later addition of Colorado and Virginia to Obama's tally - according to network projections - meant that even if the final result from Ohio were to be reversed, Romney still could not reach the needed number of electoral votes.

While Obama supporters in Chicago were ecstatic, Romney's Boston event was grim as the news was announced on television screens there. A steady stream of people left the ballroom at the Boston convention center.

THE SAME PROBLEMS

At least 120 million American voters had been expected to cast votes in the race between the Democratic incumbent and Romney after a campaign that was focused on how to repair the ailing U.S. economy.

The same problems that dogged Obama in his first term are still there to confront him again.

He faces a difficult task of tackling $1 trillion annual deficits, reducing a $16 trillion national debt, overhauling expensive social programs and dealing with a gridlocked U.S. Congress that kept the same partisan makeup.

Obama's Democrats held their Senate majority - taking hotly contested Republican-held seats in Massachusetts and Indiana - while the Republicans kept House control.

Democrat Claire McCaskill retained her U.S. Senate seat from Missouri, beating Republican congressman Todd Akin, who stirred controversy with his comment in August that women's bodies could ward off pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Democrats gained a Senate seat in Indiana that had been in Republican hands for decades after Republican candidate Richard Mourdock called pregnancy from rape something that God intended. Democratic congressman Joe Donnelly won the race.

In another high-profile Senate race, Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a law professor who headed the watchdog panel that oversaw the government's financial sector bailout, defeated incumbent Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown.

Former Maine Governor Angus King won a three-way contest for the Senate seat of retiring Republican Olympia Snowe. King ran as an independent, but he is expected to caucus with Democrats in what would amount to a Democratic pick-up.

Florida Democratic Senator Bill Nelson easily beat back a challenge from Republican congressman Connie Mack to win a third term, while Democratic congressman Chris Murphy beat Republican Linda McMahon, a businesswoman who had served as chief executive of a professional wrestling company.

Democrats were also cheered by several state referendums. Maryland voters approved same-sex marriage, the governor said, and a similar measure in Maine appeared on track to pass as well - marking the first time marriage rights have been extended to same-sex couples by popular vote.

In addition, Wisconsin Democratic congresswoman Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay U.S. Senator, defeating Republican former governor Tommy Thompson.

wee answer Wednesday ? 7 short answers to 7 short questions ...

It?s wee answer Wednesday ? seven short answers to seven short questions. Here we go?

1. I offered to let another applicant be interviewed before me

Today I had my second interview with a company and they were running behind. As I waited for my 2:30 appointment, the lady scheduled for 3:00 arrived. We spoke briefly and she told me that she was on her lunch break and worried because the interviews were running late. When they came out to get me, I offered to let her go first since I didn?t have any other obligations. Did I hurt my chances not going first?

Nope, interview order really doesn?t matter.

2. Highlighting news coverage of my work when applying for a job

I had a (small, local) news article written about my work at my last position that I feel is a great representation of what I can do. I link to it on my LinkedIn profile, but would it be appropriate to put it in my resume, cover letter, or body of an email to an employer?

Sure. Any of the three.

3. Can you stay at a job for too long?

I?m a 40-year-old woman, which I think is still consider fairly young. I have a graduate degree and am looking for a new job, really because I?m bored with my current position. I?ve worked for the same employer for 13 years, which I think is a good thing. I hear that ?job hopping? every couple of years is a bad thing, but I?m starting to think that staying put for 10+ years might not be seen as good thing either because I haven?t received any interviews that I?m 100% qualified for. Can you give me the perspective from a hiriing manager on candidates who have been with the same employer for 10+ years? Is there a way for me to market myself as a future long-term employee to a prospective employer?

While job-hopping is far worse, there?s also a point in many fields where staying too long at a job can raise questions about how you?ll adapt to new environments. I can?t pinpoint exactly when that is ? it?s somewhere more than 8 years but well before 20. It?s not necessarily a deal-breaker (depending on how you present yourself in general) and it doesn?t mean you must leave a job before that point, especially if you love it ? but you should be aware that it could be a potential concern for future employers, and balance it against other factors.

However, as for marketing yourself as a future long-term employee at a new job, you don?t really need to do anything special to do that ? the fact that you have such a long-term recent stay conveys that all on its own.

4. Removing a short-term job from my resume

I graduated college in June 2011, and for 3 months right before I graduated I took a job on campus just to make some money. It is completely unrelated to the type of jobs I am applying for. Do you think it is OK to remove it from my resume/Linkedin or should I leave it to explain the gap in unemployment? I have had some really great opportunities since then so I am not relying on it to help me. What are the general rules for short term jobs like that?

You can remove it since it was only for three months and unrelated to your field. The rules on short-term jobs are here.

And you don?t need to worry about a gap because you were in school at the time; it?s normal to have gaps during school, when your main job normally is your classes.

5. Writing interview thank-you notes when you already have an offer

Yesterday I had a great interview for a nursing position at a hospital. I went through four interviews ? one with the nurse manager, one with the nursing staff, another with the director of the hospital, and the last with the VP of nursing. I was in the middle of writing my follow-up notes this morning when I received a call from HR with a job offer for that position (yay!).

I?m now a bit uncertain on how to finish my letters ? prior to the call, I?d expanded on how I?d be a good fit for the job and finished with something along the lines of ?I look forward to hearing from you.? Now, though, it seems a bit obnoxious to write about how I would be a good candidate, since I?ve already been accepted. My sister (who hires for her department) added that it would also be presumptuous to mention anything about receiving the offer from HR. So now my letters (and my brain) are stuck at one or two sentences of ?thank you.? Do you have any suggestions on how one could finish off such a letter?

Your sister is wrong ? why would it be presumptuous to mention an offer you already have? If you?ve accepted the offer, I?d just say that you appreciated meeting with them and are looking forward to working with them. If you haven?t accepted it yet, wait to write until you do. If you end up turning it down, you can write and thank them for their time and explain that you ultimately decided X because of Y but hope to stay in touch, or whatever.

6. Can I get this job offer back?

I was offered a job in Saudi Arabia two months ago in a reputable company. Initially I had accepted the offer but I was told by the interviewer that I cannot take my family along. After I had received the offer letter and during the finalization process, due to my relatives? pressure, I had requested the HR manager to consider my request to bring my family with me to Saudi Arabia. This has upset the HR manage and he has rejected me. Later on, I realized my mistake and had apologized to the HR manager and also assured him that I do not require family status and asked him to consider me for the job. But the HR manager bluntly refused to give me one last opportunity to serve in his organization. Now I desperately need this job as it will give me an overseas experience and have monetary benefits too. I tried to convince the HR manager, but he is not heeding my request. I repent very much for my mistake. Can I get this job offer back?

Unfortunately, there?s probably not much else you can do at this point. You tried to change the HR manager?s mind, but he isn?t budging. It doesn?t sound like there?s much you can do other than moving on. I?m sorry!

7. Can my employer make me distribute leaflets off our premises?

Can my employer force me to go off the premises and ?leaflet drop? in a shopping center? I?m a visual merchandiser and today I got asked to hand out leaflets in a shopping center. I asked if I had a choice and my boss said it was non-negotiable and I was to do it! I explained that I felt uncomfortable in doing so and I was prepared to do other jobs in any part of the store and relieve another member of staff who felt comfortable ?leaflet dropping.? I was trying to compromise but no ? I didn?t have a choice in the matter. My boss did not seen concerned about how I felt and did not consider any of the compromises I came up with.

When taking the job, I was never told I?d be asked to leave the premises to leaflet drop, and I think there are a lot of health and safety issues in doing so: I would be on my own, what if I had an accident, and who would be liable if anything were to happen and i wasn?t in the correct building?

Yes, your employer can assign you any task they want, as long as they?re not asking you to do anything illegal and as long as you don?t have a binding contract to the contrary.

Workers comp covers you if you have an accident while you?re working, even if you?re not in your regular office. But is that really your concern? I wouldn?t focus on that since it sounds like a red herring; it seems like the real issue is that you just don?t want to do it. That?s the part that you need to work out with your manager ? but ultimately if she doesn?t bend, you?ll have it to decide if you?re willing to quit over it or risk getting fired if you refuse.

PlayStation 3 passes Chinese bureaucratic inspection but ban on ...

In the words of John Lennon, imagine no PlayStation 3s ? I wonder if you can. Well, it?s easy if you?re in China.

China?s Quality Certification Center issued an approval to Sony that notes the console is safe for Chinese consumers, but that doesn?t mean much since a ban on consoles is still in effect. The heavily regulated nation banned gaming consoles in 2000 to protect young people from the evils of Crash Bandicoot and Gex.

?The ban remains in place,? said Lisa Cosmas Hanson, a managing partner at gaming consultancy firm Niko Partners. ?The ministry of culture has the regulatory authority over the console segment and is the sole organization that can revoke the ban. They have no immediate plans to overturn it.?

China issued the same 3C certificate to Sony for the PlayStation 2, which was under a ban there throughout its lifecycle. This is a necessary step in selling the console, but it does not change the status of consoles in China.

?This does not mean that we have officially decided to enter the Chinese market,? Sony spokesperson Mai Hora told Reuters. ?We recognize that China is a promising market, so we will continuously study the possibility.?

Promising doesn?t begin to describe it. China?s 1.3 billion people represents approximately a sixth of the world?s population, and while many of those citizens live in poverty, the country?s economy is producing a vast working class that could afford something like an inexpensive, six-year-old console.

Ryan ends campaign with a blessing and visit home

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (Reuters) - Eighty-six days after Paul Ryan was introduced as Mitt Romney's running mate aboard the U.S.S. Wisconsin in Norfolk, Virginia, the Republican vice presidential candidate returned to his home state of Wisconsin late Monday night, putting an end to a marathon stretch of campaigning with one final rally.

"We were in Nevada. We were in Iowa. We were in Ohio. We were in Colorado," the Wisconsin congressman said, checking off the day's stops before his arrival in the state, "but it is really great to be back here in Packer land, God's country, back here in Wisconsin," Ryan said.

Ryan was introduced by Governor Scott Walker as "our fellow cheesehead," a nickname for state residents proud of their dairy farms and professional football team, the Green Bay Packers.

Starting Monday morning in Reno, Nevada, Ryan hop-scotched through five states, four time zones, and more than 2,800 miles in a last sprint before the polls open across the nation on Tuesday.

Ryan's home state is one of a handful of states whose victor is likely to determine the winner of the presidential campaign.

"They have always taken us for granted, Wisconsin," Ryan told 2,500 people gathered in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin airplane hangar. "They thought it was easy. We haven't gone Republican since 1984," Ryan said, noting the last time the state voted for a Republican presidential candidate.

"Let's prove them wrong," he said.

Earlier on Monday, in Johnston, Colorado, Ryan entered a truck stop in search of a photo opportunity and cinnamon roll and received a blessing from a Roman Catholic priest instead.

Ryan, who is Catholic, introduced himself to a patron and began talking to Father Greg Ames of Northglenn, Colorado.

Ryan removed a black string of rosary beads from his jacket pocket and asked for Ames's blessing.

On Tuesday morning, Ryan will vote in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin. While there, he'll have the rare distinction of voting for himself twice. Ryan also is on the ballot for reelection to Congress as well.

Realtor.com: Seattle Real Estate Prices Up 15 ... - SeattleHome.com

The latest statistics from Realtor.com show significant improvements in home prices for Seattle. ?While the nation is seeing a very modest home price gain of 0.78 percent over the past year, prices for Seattle real estate have fared far better.

Seattle home prices are showing a 14.98 percent gain over the past 12 months, one of the most striking price increases in the nation. ?Real estate inventory has had a significant influence on prices in 2012 as a lower number of homes has created significant competition between buyers.

The 15 percent gain was bolstered by the previous month?s 2.22 percent increase in home prices. ?With the single-month gains continuing a positive trend heading into the winter, we?re likely to see similar yearly numbers through the new year.

Email Marketing For Newbies | Blogging for Money

A few popular online marketers from previous years have always said that email marketing was very important to making a lot of money online. Due to the outcome that many people have getting over the last couple of years, we will conclude that the power of the email list is very strong. It is very obvious that much has changed in the internet marketing world, like social media coming on the scene. However, everyone has a different opinion when it comes to such matters.

?

A Short Tutorial On Email Marketing For Newbies

?

?

We encourage you to look for opportunity in all things. The email list still has many good opportunities in store. However, you to know how to go about doing things. You know very well, if you have been around a while in internet marketing, that doing a halfhearted job will not get you far.

Need a common example? All right, you have probably learned about Lifetime Video Profits and know what is necessary to make it work well. It is just nature and the way life is that some will not be as able as others, and perhaps that is one thing so many do not like about business.

Perhaps so many get too concerned with the competition and others, and that causes them to lose focus and forget they have to tend to matters at home in their own business. We have often felt that there are a hundred little things that all work in unison to do something amazing like cause people to pay you money for something.

Our point to all of this? Be different and optimize your marketing and advertising campaigns through, usually, A/B split testing.

After the CAN-SPAM Act was passed years ago, the only way to go with using email became permission-based email marketing. Actually, those who were smart knew that all along, but the law just put a legal stamp of approval on it. Chances are good that you know about this, but there are other important parts governing this type of marketing.

The very strict bottom line, enforced by law, is the need to have the email recipient?s permission prior to engaging in any type of commercial activity and marketing. If you are open to trying new marketing/advertising ideas, then seriously consider anything new you come across because new ideas are everywhere. Since we have no idea how you market or what your model is, we do realize that That Free Thing could be partially useful or maybe not at all depending on your situation.

If you want to expand on your current web business, then that is great; also, it may be possible that you do not which is your choice. As it concerns us, we keep our radar up and running at all times because we do not want to miss any chance to capitalize on an opportunity. So in order to do that, what you have to do is scale-up what you are doing and also add new methods. Maybe you should evaluate your objectives if you have not ever done that, or set them if you have not done that, so you can discover where your thoughts are on the matter. The safest route so many list marketers prefer to take is the double opt-in, or sometimes called the confirmed opt-in subscription. In this process, you are gaining permission to send commercial emails plus the person is verifying that permission given to you. Yes, there is an additional step involved, and there is one possible compelling reason to do it. Sometimes a person will forget they have subscribed, or maybe they may have an ax to grind, and they accuse you of spamming them. All that does is cause trouble for you, the list owner, because you have to prove your innocence. If the person had to double opt-in to get on your list, then your autoresponder service will have a record of that. Today, our introduction to SEO Link Monster has been relatively short, but you should have a solid idea of what is possible.

We often see people complaining about bad results, and with a little conversation you realize they do not have sound knowledge. These methods can work hand-in-hand with paid for ads, for example, and that is possible even on a small budget. Prior to getting heavily involved with anything that you have not done before, just slow down and use your business head. Testing that does not involve all your resources is really the smart approach so you can get a much better picture of the situation. But in the end each of us has our own comfort level, and just do what you are comfortable with doing. Yes, that and much more will help to take care of you with your business.

The single opt-in lacks the confirmation step that the double opt-in imposes on the subscriber. Obviously, there is no record of confirmation the person actually subscribed with the single opt-in. However, this method is still very popular with marketers because it increases the rate of subscriptions. Yes, people can be fickle at times by signing up to be on your list but never clicking the confirmation link they receive ? if you use the double opt-in. With a single opt-in, the person gives you their contact information, and then they are merely sent an email stating they have subscribed.

There is a lot to learn when you begin reading about email marketing. All those rates and percentages are metrics that will just about never be perfect. Once you begin, then learn about how you can do split testing and making your numbers improve. In the end, though, the one thing that matters most is having a positive relationship with your email subscribers.

Mumbai residents spread awareness about fitness, walk for health ...

Mumbai, Nov.4 (ANI): In a bid to urge people to make walking a habit, Mumbai residents participated in a walkathon on Sunday to bring about a long term and sustainable behavioural change in their lives.

The multi-city initiative ?Walk for Health? was announced by Max Bupa Health Insurance Company to inculcate fitness into the lives of people, so that they place health above everything else.

The walkathon has already been a success in several cities. The company has planned to cover 11 cities and participants from all age groups could register for the event.

In the humdrum of life, we often tend to neglect our health. An erratic lifestyle with wrong eating habits leads to several kinds of lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes and obesity.

?The idea is to encourage a healthy lifestyle. I think in urban India, a lot of people take a sedentary lifestyle and that leads to a lot of diseases like hypertension, diabetes or something else. Our view is that we really want to encourage people and create awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and to adopt walking. It is something, which is very easy to do. You can walk in the office, in your house, park, wherever you like. So, the idea is to encourage people to live a healthier lifestyle,? said Gagan Bhalla, Director, Operation and Strategy, Max Bupa.

Walking is an easy form of exercise, which can be done at one?s own convenience. The inclusion of any form of physical exercise can result in several health benefits in the long run.

Adopting walking as a permanent habit could be a solution. According to reports, if we swapped one car journey a week to walking, traffic levels would reduce by at least 10 per cent.

Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor, who is riding high on the success of his latest comedy caper ?Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana? was seen flagging off the event.

The actor, a self-confessed fitness freak, said that this was a good initiative to inculcate walking as a habit.

?Well, I think it?s a wonderful campaign. It is a good initiative, because I believe that everyone must exercise and walking is the easiest form of exercise. Anyone can do it at any age,? he said.

According to a study by the insurance company, 13 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women in India use their cars for commuting to places which are at a walking distance.

The research also showed that the figure is much higher than other countries such as the United States, Hong Kong, Egypt and Brazil.(ANI)

NBC Cancels ANIMAL PRACTICE

As earlier reported here, NBC?s freshman comedy, ANIMAL PRACTICE, was in great ratings danger. Now NBC pulled the comedy from the schedule which was supposed to air on Halloween Wednesday. NBC didn?t want to enter into the November sweeps with this weak entry which suffered from poor ratings, but seems to be giving Jimmy Fallon?s GUYS WITH KIDS a little more time to develop an audience.

ANIMAL PRACTICE seemed much like a weak animal-based ripoff of THE OFFICE in many ways, and PETA attacked the program as well, although there?s absolutely no evidence that any of the animals used in the show?s production were harmed in any way. On the contrary, Crystal the monkey was known for flashing her big smile on the small screen, making her far and away the best thing that ANIMAL PRACTICE had going for it. Crystal knew that she was a star, and she loved every moment of it.

During it?s short run, Crystal the monkey was the highest paid animal star on television, earning a reported $12,000 a week, also making the animal star one of TV?s highest paid actors overall. Crystal was also the star of the popular movie, THE HANGOVER II.

Blackened Coast: Magic & Miscellaneous

Blackened Coast

Something is eating up the land from the inside out and the outside in. The shores are turning black with dead, rotting bodies. The realm's core is growing hotter. A summons has been sent to adventurers to discover the source and stop the corruption.

Dark Magic

I'll allow the characters to decide the method between the following. There are two kinds, one that others classify as demonic, and then there is dark energy.

Demonic energy is typically used by warlocks, and the majority of sorcerers because it is slightly more powerful, and the spells will allow the summons of others. For warlocks, this means demonic entities such as demons and the like (or darklings that are too weak in will to resist), for sorcerers this means they can summon lesser creatures, imps, small fiends, etc.

Dark energy is more of a calling upon the negative energy around them, think corruption. For example, the dark magic user taps into the corruption that can be nestled within almost any living thing. From a human, it would be the negative emotions, hate, anger, rage, lust, and so on. From nature, it would siphon from any decay or rot, no matter how small, and make it grow to fit their purpose. If a tree was sick, the dark energy user could call upon that sickness to fuel their spells, but as a result, that sickness would spread and if continued to be pulled, would eventually cause a blight upon the immediate vicinity.

Typically, users that implement dark energy have a much stronger reputation for being evil or bad, because they are essentially feeding off that which is considered 'evil' (hate, rage, disease, etc) and making it grow stronger. Whereas demonic energy users are still considered bad as a whole, but there have been a few tales of warlocks using their summoned demons and powers to save a city from impending doom. Of course, some just see those tales as 'rubbish'.
